Australia are 70/2 at lunch, which England would probably have settled for.

I disagree. I can't recall ever being given out caught behind off an outside edge where I didn't feel in my hands and hear the nick. I can remember being given out lbw several times when I had both felt and heard the inside edge. Hence the commentators' disbelief that neither Vince or Malan referred the decisions.

I see your point that it must be feasible to have such a fine nick that you would neither feel it or hear it, therefore you would not know that you had nicked it. To have two instances of that in the same innings is almost unbelievable, which leads me to believe there must be other factors in play.

Maybe the crowd noise would explain why they didn't hear the nick; Malan's nick was a big one which deviated the ball onto his pads, so he surely would have felt it in his hands. Were they reluctant to refer because they are relative newcomers to the test side and didn't want to be responsible for losing a referral? Surely not.

The argument for nicking it without knowing it is reinforced by the fact that Cook apparently asked both batsmen if they had nicked it during discussions over a possible referral, and presumably both said no.

That amazed me and the commentators who know a lot more about cricket than me, so I remain flummoxed by it all.

Anderson must have made a little history on day 4. He faced the first ball of the day as a batsman, then bowled the second ball of the day as a bowler.

Obviously not. They considered referring but didn't refer because on both occasions Cook said it looked out to him.
