According to The Times the company who won the passport printing deal were £50m cheaper than the British so there you are that’s a BREXIT saving for you. Oh and some of our existing passports are already printed overseas so I do not see what the fuss is unless The Brexiteers are against all things Europe whatever the cost.

The boss of De La Rue is kicking off about the decision. Maybe he should answer the question of why his bid was so expensive and why he expects the British Taxpayer to pay over the odds just because he runs an uncompetitive business.

De La Rue make all the quality playing cards.

The cost of a new passport is now £72.50, do we know how much it costs to make the passports in the first place, but I'm suggesting that it's less than a fiver.
So someone at the passport office is making lots of money out of us.

When you buy a passport there are a lot more costs to consider

Base stock (what this contract is about)
Application process (forms, websites etc)
Personalisation
Handling costs (civil servants in the passport office)
Postage

I don’t know if the Passport Office are self funding yet but they have tried to reduce costs on the general taxpayer by moving costs to the passport applicant which seems fair enough. So if you need a new passport do you want to pay your share of an extra £50m cost to be able to say you bought British?

Oh and remember your current passport may not have been made in Britain!

Apparently De La Rue make passports for 40 different countries & have a hand in making the new five & ten pound notes & as they've already been making UK passports for the past 8-9 years they already have a proven track record.Governments & Councils have a proven track-record when they fall the the old concept that cheapest is always the best option & then have to fork out extra when cock-ups are made. When tenders for work come in ridiculously cheaper than their counterparts then there is obviously a drop in quality & corners will be cut.How many corners were cut resulting in cheaper & inferior quality cladding at Greenfell & other buildings just to save a few quid in the short term.

The problem is Governments past & present have form in not backing British business & are constantly overlooking UK companies in favour of cheaper options abroad (utilities, train companies, steel manufacturers etc) & then remain clueless (& rather self-defeating )when it resorts to job losses. We even have German & French companies that run various utility & train companies with the money they receive part subsidizes their infrastructure back in their home countries.

And will the saving cost of the new cheaper company result in a cheaper Passport I doubt it.

I bet we don't get other country's spitting out there dummies when they go overseas and nick jobs from those countries. one rule for us and them is it.

There's a reason why we don't back British business and that's because it is shit when it comes to contracts how many big projects are running so behind and double or treble the costs that were stated I mean look at HS2 nearly 30 years build time and costs from 40-100 Billon all to put a new line between London and fucking Birmingham. Gone are the days when we lead the world in everything and Brexit will make it worse not better !!

The savings to the British Taxpayer are said by the Government to be £100 - £120m over the 5 year contract & 70 new jobs created at the Gemalto sites in Fareham & Haywood. More and more this sounds like De La Rue have been ripping us off over the last few years. We were told Brexit would save us money so those who voted for Brexit are getting what they asked for!
