Internet Porn Site Regulation

Interesting piece on the age verification and its potential consequences :

The numbers quoted are of particular note.
The website owner in the piece runs a small site earning around £1000 per month.
The site gets around 3000 visitors per day.
The mobile companies are apparently preparing to offer age verification for 10p a go.

So, assuming that site continues to get 3000 hits, that would cost £300 to age verify all those visitors for just ONE day!
The article implies that cost occurs every day, but that may not be the case, the charge may just be to setup your age verified account and initially check your details, or it may only occur whenever you login to that account, you could stay logged in for days. Even so, that extra cost will be a big hit on certain sites, including the likes of this forum.

This could mean the end of free access to adult websites then.

Thing is, governments are ultimately about control. And particularly important in today's age is a control of 'message'.

The internet is an anathma to this in its largely unaccountable nature; the public being increasingly informed by non-standard news media - almost all these sources originating online. This not only threatens the reach of the message of those in power but also the commercial viabilty of those usually charged with disseminating it.

The targeting of porn is simply the easiest bridgehead in the world to establishing the foundations of the censorship required to combat this. Unfortunately we in the UK are a public nutured by years of censorship unparalled in any country in the west. So we nod along to all the unverified, but responsibility easing, cries of 'think of the children', until it's too late and something truly important (unlike easy access to porn) has been lost.
