My hard drive's fucked

Don't know what happened, it was working fine and then I tried to access it and it said it could not be found . So I disconnected it and then re-connected it and still got no response, the light didn't even come on. Forgot to mention; it's an external hard drive connected via usb, the driver for it is stored on the hard drive itself but it can be used without a driver as a usb mass storage device. It had all my babe channel videos on so I wanted to know if they could be salvaged? I would be too embarrassed to get it repaired professionally due to all the porn. Can anyone help?

Depends on the state of the drive itself. Should be a standard 3.5" drive in most USB housings so if the casing is easy enough to take apart without breaking might be worth putting it inside the PC to see if the drive has failed or if it's just the USB interface

Thanks for the reply Red. It's not an actual usb memory stick, I just meant that it's connected via a usb lead. But I suppose what you suggested still applies? The fact that the light doesn't come on suggests to me that it's just the casing that is broke, i'm hoping the drive itself is ok. Unfortunately I wouldn't have a clue how to put the drive in my computer manually. Someone else has suggested that I buy a new casing and try the drive in that, i'm thinking thats probably a safer option for me seeing as i'm a complete novice when it comes to things like these.

Hard drive enclosures are fairly cheap and the perfect solution when the USB or power fails on an external drive. Make sure you get the right size - 2.5" or 3.5".

Sorry to hear about your problems mate,
If it were me before I started taking it apart I think I would try it on another Computer or different USB port or with a different USB lead.Also have you checked the Power Supply,does it have its own or powered by the Computer?
I use Freecom External Drives and when one stopped working it turned out to be a faulty power cable.

You also need one that takes the same type of drive as yours, either serial (SATA) or parallel IDE type.
Drives do fail, but its more likely to be the cables, power supply or caddy electronics/connections or even the usb port on the computer.

Thanks for all the replies. The drive is a Freecom sync FHD-1 60gb. I can't find the user manual for it but I think it's 2.5"?? I haven't got a clue whether it's SATA or IDE, is there any way to find out? I've tried it in every usb port and nothing happens, it could well be that the power cord is broke like you said mrwotzup. I'm going to order one of the hd enclosures but I want to make sure that I buy the correct one. Cheers guys.

Edit Just had a thought,had a problem a few years back with a Zip Drive,tried everything...turned out the fuse had gone in the Electric Plug
Didnt even consider that,until several hours later

Well if it wasn't fucked before, it is now. I tried for about an hour to remove the hard drive from the old enclosure before finally taking a claw hammer to the mother fucker! Oh well, thanks for the help anyway guys, I just don't have the patience when it comes to things like this. Time to start re-building my collection I think!

I had the same problem earlier this week with my Iomega 500GB i bought a new Iomega 1TB as a backup as the blue led was flickering on the 500 and then the worst happen'd you guessed it, it would not start. So i did a hardrive removal from the case etc completely stripped it and it was def the switch that had gone, after a few tweaks i pushed a small piece of card under the socket where the power switch is located on the circuit board and hay presto got it working again, luckily i have now transferred everything to the 1TB and am using the 500Gb again GOD i had all my babeshows videos and all software etc stored on it.
