Wow cant believe Rio is the new captain. In my opinion he is so over-rated. Man City have just showed what an average defender he is this season with the goals they have scored when he has been playing. Only decent thing he has that Terry doesnt is pace.

Really poor choice naming RIO captain should of waited instead of just naming new captain strait away. For one hes hardly played and when he as looked very shaky and very poor not even match fit. Give it to ROONEY he would of worked his arse of for team and improved him as a player am sure

The very LAST thing Rooney needs is to be saddled with the captain's armband. If we need ANYONE to just concentrate on what he does best (scoring and creating goals) it's him. We certainly don't need him worrying about everybody else on the park.

We already have to try and stop him from running about everywhere as it is, making him captain would merely make him feel even more obliged to try and be in ten places at once.

If anything Rooney is over-enthusiastic, we need him calm, not hyped up even more than he is already.......We want him dropping grenades in the opposing team's penalty area, not helping out our full-back because as captain he feels that he ought to.

So ferdinand is injured for next weeks friendly with egypt and given gerrards track record of injuries before friendlys (which suddenly clear up for the following weekend) what happens next? Even if gerrard is fit then he's unlikely to play the full 90 minutes. Rooney, Lampard, Barry? and then we really are into unknown territory.

After Gerrard's recent retirement who are the candidates for the job?

Rooney would get my vote he's matured at least on the field (if not in his private life) & I think the other players respect him. Rooney would be good enough to play at least to the end of the European Championships in 2016 & maybe beyond.

Other than that, the sum total of the captain's responsibilities is to call "heads" or "tails" during the coin toss at the start of the match. I'm worried that Rooney might yell, "Evens!"
