RE: who will win the uefa champions league?
Every few years the CL (or the old European cup) throws out a surprise, such as Steau Bucharest, Red Star Belgrade, Marseille or Porto. I've got a sneaky feeling that one might be due this year.

It's not outside the realms of possibility that after their stunning result against Real and with no transfer window until the season ends for the bigger teams to snaffle their best players, Lyon might be flying high in Europe under the belief that this is their year. Bordeaux are looking like a side with something to prove as well and let's not forget Bayern. While people might laugh at me for putting them in with outsiders like like Lyon and Bordeaux, did any of you really think that Bayern had a decent shout at the beginning of the season? Even with Robben and Ribery? If you're completely honest, I'll bet you didn't.

Lets' look at the so called favourites. Inter are the strongest Italian team, which isn't saying a great deal anymore, but they're still vulnerable in the midfield and lack mobility at the back. Barcelona appear to be the nailed on favourites amongst those who seem to believe that anything Spanish is automatically superior, but they're just as defensively frail as they were last season, the difference being that this season they're unlikely to play a team who'll embarrass themselves by sending in the celebrity doubles from a booking agency while the real players have an early holiday instead of playing in the final (I still think that's the only possible reason for Man Utd's pathetic showing in last season's showpiece). Arsenal can be got at and don't let anyone tell you otherwise, there are still glaring weaknesses in that team. Chelsea can be exposed for both width and pace at any given moment. Man Utd look imperious with Rooney in the side, bereft of a cutting edge without; there's also nagging questions about the durability of the central midfield over 90 minutes against quality opposition (I'm a United fan, so trust me when I tell you that assessment hurts me to make).

Everything I've written above points to this being one of the outsiders years. It's worth checking out the odds on the three teams I mentioned at the top and sticking a fiver on each of them to win outright.

Well out of the outsiders you mention, I'd have Bayern because if their European pedigree. I know there players may not have a Cl medal, but... for some reason being part of a club with a big European history often seems to help. Valencia is an example, they were so much better then Real in 2000 yet fell apart in the final, it's almost as if their players thought of the 8 European cups Real had previously, " we're playing Real Madrid" and that's what got to them.

The CL often goes to a team that has won it before. The last time it didn't was back in 1997 when Borussia Dortmund beat Juventus 3-1.

RE: who will win the uefa champions league?
I'm a proper Chelsea fan (i.e long BEFORE Abramovich's money turned up) and let me tell you, i'm VERY nervous about tuesday night......The whole Jose thing will be difficult enough, but putting that to one side, to be honest we really ain't playing that well right now either. Defensively we've been up and down for months, an area that under Jose's supervision was always tighter than a duck's arse.

Recently we always look liable to concede, Cech certainly isn't the same keeper that we bought a few years ago and i'm sorry, but "Hilairious" isn't good enough to keep goal for Chelsea in Cech's absence. Turnbull is a really unknown quantity at this level and i'm not sure that i want to be finding out how good he is/isn't in a vital ECL game against Inter. We all know about JT's problems (snore) and he and others can deny it all they like, but it IS affecting his game, that's a fact.

Fortunately on the plus side of things we always look liable to score as well, so this one's a real toss-up in my book. I take us to go all the way if we get past Inter but make no mistake, this one's a real hurdle.
