The boning is handy because as you wear the corset, it moulds the garment to your shape. In the old days, corsets used whalebone (hence the name) but that's illegal now.
There's a myth that wearing corsets will damage your internal organs and affect your breathing, but that's only if it doesn't fit right and if you overdo it on the tightening.

Luckily, with a fuller figure you only need to move some flesh about near your waist to get a stunning hourglass shape, and it's neither permanent nor painful.
