Jackie (2016)

A poignant insight in to the life of perhaps America's favourite ever First Lady. Natalie Portman gives the performance of a lifetime as Jacqueline Lee Bouvier Kennedy. The mannerisms, the look, the voice - they're all perfect. She obviously spent a lot of time researching the role. The movie largely focuses on the aftermath of her husband's assassination, her mood, her ability to remain largely dignified in the face of overwhelming crisis, her love for her children, her determination to proceed with future plans and her ability to tell a story. Portman displays all these qualities perfectly. I'd still like to see a movie which focuses more on her own life achievements, away from the assassination aftermath. Overall though, her portrayal of, in my opinion, one of the most fascinating women in history, is nothing short of awesome. I'd welcome her return to the role in any future movie. Peter Sarsgaard, Billy Crudrup, Greta Gerwig, Caspar Phillipson, Richard E. Grant and the late John Hurt are among the supporting cast. 3.5/5

From Russia With Love (1963)

Classic James Bond thriller starring Sean Connery and Robert Shaw.

007 is on the search for a Russian decoding machine, known as a Lektor. Bond needs to find this machine, before the evil SPECTRE organization discovers it first. Whilst being romantically linked with Russian girl, Tatiana Romanova, Bond sneaks his way around Istanbul, whilst each SPECTRE agent tries to pick him off, including the over powering twisted Donald 'Red' Grant and ex-KGB agent Rosa Klebb.
My favourite Bond film, mainly due to the great suspense created by Robert Shaw's Red Grant. The scenes between Shaw & Connery on the Orient Express are fantastically tense and possibly the best scenes in all of the Bond movies. Lotte Kenya is also great as Rosa Klebb, providing another stand out villain.

Carry On Doctor

Little bit of trivia Sidney James character spent most of the film in hospital bed because he was recovering from a heart attack.

8/10.

Chase a Crooked Shadow (1958) ( Talking Pictures TV FV81 / Sky 343 / Freesat 306)

A wealthy heiress Kimberley Prescott (Anne Baxter) living in a villa in Spain is approached by Richard ("Dambusters") Todd claiming to be her long-lost brother, who she says died in car crash in South Africa.
He convinces the local police inspector (Herbert Lom) by means of passports and etc, and turns up with a couple of accomplices to worm into Kimberley's life and slowly start to keep her prisoner in her own house, while Herbert and everyone else outside starts to doubt her sanity as she struggles to find anybody to back her up that Todd is not what he says he is.
Can she convince Herbert she's not mad, before she "dies accidentally" leaving Todd the family fortune ?

Quite good, almost Hitchcock-type touches - can Kimberley sneak a brandy glass with Todd's fingerprints on it out of the house to Herbert ? - and a sting in the tale at the end.

The Lego Movie Rolleyes

Yes, I know Blush I had it saved for when my niece was here, but we didn't get around to it.
It had a 5 star rating and the blurb said "something in it for all ages", so I thought wtf Smile

If you want to be a kid again, stick with the Madagascar and Ice-Age movies...

Don't bother/10

Unhinged (2017);

A remake of one the original 'video nasties' that was banned in the early 80's about a group of American women who get lost whilst driving in the countryside in England on the way to a wedding. On the way they encounter a rather unsavory character whom in a scuffle they accidently manage to bludgeon to death & dump him in the boot of their car.Things then get from bad to worse when the old petrol gauge starts flashing in the middle of nowhere & so driving on fumes they come across the only sign of civilization in an old cottage inhabited by a strange elderly lady Miss Perkins whom offers them refuge for the night until they can get their car back on the road.
Miss Perkins isn't just one sandwich short of a picnic she's nuttier than squirrel shit with hundreds & thousands & chopped nuts sprinkled on top combined with a small matter of a creepy sounding voice that can be heard in the shed at the bottom of the garden leaving the women questioning whether staying at the residence is the smartest move.

The main problem with this film is that it feels so amateur & poorly made it feels like it was made by a group of Media Study students on a home camera with a £50 budget. The acting was so woeful that it was hard to feel any empathy with any of the characters. The original 'banned' film was always considered to be like poor-mans Psycho film (with Anthony Perkins) as the themes are similar & whilst the original wasn't particularly good it was still a mile better than this piss-poor remake.
2/10.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

It's not quite what I expected from the trailers. While there is some black comedy, it's also a very dark movie overall, every character is shades of grey.

8/10
