One thousandth goal
On May 20, 2007, Romário scored his 1000th goal, a penalty kick against Sport Recife, playing for Vasco da Gama. The Brazilian press claimed him as one of few players in professional football history to achieve this, like Pelé and Puskás The 1000th goal drew much attention from both Brazilian and international press, with the game being stopped for over 20 minutes to allow for celebrations from his fans. There is some controversy over the validity of the 1000 goals as it claim is somewhat inaccurate, because Romário's research team counted his goals in junior, friendly and non-official games.

FIFA congratulated Romário on his milestone goal but stated he is still officially on 929 goals, as 77 came in youth football, with others being scored in friendly matches.

Romário made his international debut in 1987 aged 21 & ended it in 2005 aged 39.
International career Apps (Gls)

He was a member of the Brazil Olympic team which won a silver medal in Seoul in 1988 where he scored 7 goals. including Olympic games his Brazil record is 71 goals in 85 international matches. He also played in the 1990 & 1994 world cups winning it in USA 94 scoring 5 goals & being voted player of the tournament. He missed the 1998 world cup due to injury & was left out of the 2002 tournament due to indiscipline.

Romário will forever be remembered as one of the greatest players of all time & possibly the goal scorer of all time.
Recognition from fellow footballing greats include:
Johan Cruyff Defined him as "genius of the goal area".
Diego Maradona In his autobiography Yo soy El Diego, described Romário as an "incredible finisher" adding that he had not seen a striker like him, and mentioning that Romário would be in his all-time "dream team" without any hesitation.
Roberto Baggio said: "Romário is one of the greatest players of all time. He has good technique and personality. He is a master of art in the penalty area."
Michael Laudrup Has stated that Romario was his favorite striking partner throughout his career. "No one else could utilize my passes the way he did."

Marco Van Basten

A chance to talk about one of my true footballing heroes. Marco Van Basten was one of the most prolific and lethal forwards ever to play the game, and achieved numerous honours at club and country level. He was one of several players in a generation who featured in Holland's second major dominant period during the 1980s. He was known for spectactular goals and strength on the ball, and scored one of the greatest goals I've ever seen during the victorious 1988 European Championship final against the USSR. A career that could have achieved even more, if it hadn't been tragically cut short by injury.

Club career record:

Ajax: 128 goals in 133 appearances from 1982 to 1987
AC Milan: 90 goals in 147 appearances from 1987 to 1992

International career record:

Holland under 21: 13 goals from 15 caps in 1981
Holland: 24 goals from 58 caps from 1983 to 1992

A family football record:

Frank R Lampard and Frank J Lampard are the only father and son to appear for England and to have also played for the same club (West Ham Utd).

There are 2 other fathers and sons who represented England: Brian Clough and Nigel Clough and George E Eastham and George R Eastham.

RE: Football Records
Premier League / Top Flight vs Non-League in the FA Cup

A look at some of the best performances by non-league football clubs, who came up against top flight opposition in the FA Cup. Some great upsets here.

2005, Third Round - Manchester United 0-0 Exeter City

Non-league Exeter produced a magnificent rearguard action to earn a deserved FA Cup third-round draw at Old Trafford. United fielded a weakened side, but it still contained the likes of Phil Neville, Cristiano Ronaldo, Paul Scholes and Alan Smith. Conference club Exeter matched the FA Cup holders at the 'Theatre of Dreams' to set up a lucrative replay, and they could have claimed a sensational win when lifelong United fan Dean Moxey shot narrowly wide after a scramble in the penalty area.

1972, Third Round Replay - Hereford United 2-1 Newcastle United

Hereford United produced one of the greatest FA Cup upsets ever when they beat First Division Newcastle 2-1 in a third-round replay in 1972. Newcastle looked to have made it to the fourth round thanks to a late goal by Malcolm McDonald. However, Ronnie Radford then popped up to score the most famous 30-yard goal in cup history to take the game into extra time. Substitute Ricky George scored the winner as Hereford became the first non-league club to defeat a First Division side since 1949.

1989, Third Round - Sutton United 2-1 Coventry City

Non-league Sutton United caused one of the biggest upsets in FA Cup history with their 2-1 victory over top-flight Coventry at Gander Green Lane, thanks to goals from Tony Rains and Matthew Hanlan. Two years earlier, Coventry had won the trophy. Sutton's cup run was not destined to last, however, as they were beaten 8-0 by Norwich City in the next round.

1997, Fourth Round - Hednesford Town 2-3 Middlesbrough

Non-league Hednesford had enjoyed a great run in the season's FA Cup, defeating league sides Blackpool and York City, and were rewarded by being drawn against premier league Middlesbrough. A fascinating end to end contest developed between Hednesford's working class heroes and Middlesbrough's international superstars. The likes of Fabrizio Ravanelli, Juninho and Emerson almost came unstuck against the Pitmen, even going behind to Joe O' Connor's early goal. With the game tied at 1-1 until the last three minutes, Jan Arge Fjortoft and Ravanelli finally spared Boro's blushes with late strikes. O' Connor's stoppage time second ensured a very nervy finish and Boro somehow scraped through.

England 0-0 Montenegro

The first ever time that England failed to score at (the new) Wembley.

Dejan Stankovic is the only player in World Cup history to play for 3 different countries. In 1998 Stankovic played for Yugoslavia, in 2006 he played for Serbia and Montenegro, and in 2010 he played for Serbia.

RE: Football Records
One of English football's most high profile rivalries and head to head record:-

Liverpool vs Nottingham Forest

Met 115 times in all competitions. Liverpool wins - 56; Forest wins - 30; draws - 29.

Was always a famous fixture in the English league, particularly during the 1970s and 1980s when the two teams were at their highest levels.

European Cup 1978/1979

They met during the 1978/1979 European Cup first knockout round. Forest recorded a 2-0 victory at the City Ground in the first leg through strikes from Garry Birtles and Colin Barrett. Throughout the game, Liverpool were continuously denied by outstanding defending from Birtles, Gemmill and Lloyd, not to mention Peter Shilton in the Forest goal.

Liverpool were expected to make up the defecit with the second leg still to come at Anfield. However, the Forest defence held out superbly again to record a 0-0 draw and send the unfancied Midlanders through to the quarter finals. Neutrals up and down the country didn't like the result and thought that Liverpool would have a better chance of going on to win the competition, but Brian Clough's Forest shocked the world by getting to the final and winning their first European trophy.

The two sides were drawn together in the ill-fated FA Cup Semi Final of 1989, when the game was abandoned just 6 minutes into the game at Hillsborough Stadium. 96 people lost their lives during the human crush at the stadium in what remains one of the saddest days in the history of English football. SadSad

I know someone who was there, luckily for him the only way he's been abandoned by the British government is by losing his job after they spent everyones money, & not by refusing to bring the South Yorkshire Police to justice!!!
