Now good computer peoples
Do you have the cpu fan blowing air on to the heat sink or blowing away from it.

I've googled and it seems to get both answers.

The fan on the back is blowing air out of the pc which about everybody says is right.

But there seems to be a conflict with blowing air on to the heat sink and cooling it or drawing air away from the cpu.

thanks.

RE: Now good computer peoples.
you blow air onto the heat sync (hsf) ALWAYS!. the reason is that if you don't the hsf doesn't work as effectively.(the center of the cpu doesn't get any airflow if your drawing air, you get a neutral flow spot like you do with 2 bar magnets/ but blowing air onto it covers the whole surface).
the only time you have a cpu fan on pull is if you have a 3rd party cooler that has 2 fans. 1 drawing in the other pushing out. yes some people put a fan drawing air over there 3rd party coolers but normally its because of space requirements, as it is less efficient. all good manufacturers recommend blowing air onto there coolers for this reason. (my personal reason is that after a few months the fans get dusty, if you have them set to pull air through the cpu then all that dust that would normally end up on the blades of the fan ends up blocking up the cooler).
on the stock hsf the fan is always set to blow air on to the cpu. (intel 1s you cant reverse the fan anyway)

as for case fans, you want to pull air in at the front bottom and blow out at the back/top, preferably at an even cfm (cubic flow meter) also best to use high static pressure fans (fans that give good pressure even in still air), this is often accompanied by high cfm values.

And you are quite right!

I have flipped it today and according to speed fan I use to have temps of 50 - 60, Core 50 - 60 with surges up to 79! hdd 45 - 46.

Currently burning a disc with roxio temp 29, 29 and 32, core35, 39, 35, 42 and hdd 35.

Basically its knocked 10 - 20 C of the temperatures just by flipping the fan.

I don't know if it's my imagination but all programmes seem to open quicker and run smoother.

ps you are right about the dust, that is what made me fiddle about with it and I was having surges of heat.

Hopefully no long term problems.

Moral of the story, always better to blow and not suck!

what cpu and cooler do you have?
also did you remove the hsf entirely from the cpu?

Well you'll find there are differing answers online to which way a fan works as it all depends on the flow dynamics of the system

Personally I normally get mine to draw the air off by sucking, but then I normally used a sheathed active heatsink and engineer for a quiet system balanced against reasonable temps rather than lowest temps. Besides, means I'm not blowing warm air over the other chips. You did check your temps elsewhere? What, no equipment to do this? Then stick with the manufacturer's recomendation/fitment. You might be cooling the CPU more efficiently but you could be increasing temperature stresses elsewhere

If your that paranoid about cooling move to liquid cooling. Unless you're overclocking though, in which case cooling is only part of the equation you need to consider, then as long as you're keeping within operating tolerances then why spend time fixing something that isn't broken? Rolleyes

I don't even know who I am so you'll forgive me if I ask 'Who the f**k do you think you are?!'

Now you see, that is exactly where the confusion came from. This has only two fans, the one on the heat sink and the exhaust fan. since flipping it the temperatures in speed fan have dropped by this 10 - 20 C and it's has quiet has a mouse now.

There again, your the expert and you say draw.

What I can't remember, weather the fan was like that by the manufacturer, possible mistake at the factory, or, I had dusted it before and I have forgotten (no, my memory is that bad).
