RE: x files fans
Season four galore!

Home - How the hell did this episode ever make it past the Fox censors? It goes without saying that I'm glad it did.
Musings of a Cigarette Smoking Man - I really enjoyed this episode, though I obviously took Frohike's revelations with a whole handful of salt. On a side note, while CSM has been bested as the greatest Is-He-Or-Isn't-He-The-Evil-Villain category by Lost's Benjamin Linus, he's still pretty bad-ass.
Tunguska - An impressive ripped-from-the-headlines alien bacteria story, and a great spin on the Tunguska legend. The repeated beat-downs on Krycek were fun, too. Terma was all over the place, but oh, well.
Paper Hearts - Even though you knew the mystery of Samantha Mulder's abduction was never gonna be resolved in this episode, it was still an interesting way to mess with our heads.
Never Again - Scully gets raunchy, and Jodie Foster guest stars as a talking tattoo. Awesome.
Leonard Betts - A brilliant, inventive, gory-as-hell episode, and another fun quirky casting in ER's "Rocket" Romano as the unwilling villain of the piece.
Memento Mori - I was tempted to lump all of the "Scully gets cancer" trifecta together, but I really feel each episode deserves an individual mention. OK, so this one recycled plots from previous episodes, it was still heartrending to watch Scully and Mulder come to terms with her illness.
Unrequited - Though it was a little dry, a really enjoyed this interesting spin on the invisible man plot.
Tempus Fugit/Max - The first non-mythology two-parter, this was a fun distraction from the heavier plotlines, even though I was sad to see both Max and Agent Pendrell go.
Small Potatoes - Not only is Darin Morgan a great writer, he's also an excellent actor. Top man!
Demons/Gethsemane - I've decided to count these two together, even though their not really related to each-other, as they both focus on Mulder's growing mental breakdown and could have constituted to a significant reboot of the whole mythology storyline. Sadly, the whole "it was all a lie" plot was doomed from the start given the premise of the show. Gethsemane also gets a negative mark for reintroducing the Scully and religion plot.

The show was starting to feel a little stale. It needed livening up.

Season five, whatcha lookin' for?

The Unusual Suspects - The Gunmen's first solo episode, this is a huge sentimental favourite of mine. If only their spin-off show was more like this.
Detour - A quintessential monster-of-the-week episode that I thoroughly enjoyed despite Scully's singing and the monsters baring no relation to the Mothman legend (see also El Mundo Gira from Season Four).
The Post-Modern Prometheus - Cher, Jerry Springer and J. Peterman all in one quirky as hell B-movie homage. I've got Mark Snow's score playing in my head as I type - it just doesn't get any better.
Kill Switch - Gets on the list for the opening sequence alone, not to mention Kung-Fu Scully versus evil nurses. A friend of mine was really into the whole "uploading" idea, so naturally he loved this one. I've had some weird fucking friends...
Bad Blood - Despite my vendetta against the comedy episodes, I loved this one. I was quoting Luke (brother of Owen) Wilson's delivery of the "I'm Sheriff Lucius Hartwell!" for weeks afterwards.
Patient X/The Red and the Black” - This was a fantastic return to form for the conspiracy storyline, introducing top-notch new characters, plot twists and villains. The faceless rebels were terrifying, the locations and set-pieces stunning, and that’s without the Krycek/Mulder kiss (WTF?) and Scully’s orgasmic groaning during the hypnotherapy sequence (“Oh-my-God!”)
The Pine Bluff Variant - An excellent thriller, though I wish they’d drawn out the ‘is Mulder a traitor?’ plot a little longer.
Folie a Deux - Mulder goes mad - again! Zombies and brain-sucking bugs disguised as humans. What more could you ask for?

Fun with some definite signs of improvement, but far too short. I'll comment on both movies at some point, but not now.

Season Six Remix!

Drive - I really like this episode. Fellow Seinfeld fans may notice Bryan Cranston, a.k.a. Dr. Tim Whately, as the anti-Semitic hostage taker who’s head explodes. Seriously.
Triangle - Die Wahrheit Ist Irgendwo Da Draußen. A self-consciously quirky tale, but with some interesting sequences. CSM’s Canadian-German was awesome.
Dreamland/Dreamland II - By this stage the comedy episodes were becoming a bit too frequent, but I still had some chuckles with this non-mythology two-parter.
How the Ghosts Stole Christmas - This is easily the best Christmas episode of any show, ever!
Terms of Endearment - Get’s a mention because Bruce Campbell guest starred. That is all.
The Rain King - I'm mentioning it because I hate this fucking episode, despite Clayton Rohner's dancing.
Two Fathers/One Son - Full disclosure… Well, not quite. Nevertheless, there was an epic feel to this two-parter, and I felt that it was everything the first movie should’ve been. My only complaint (and this also goes for Patient X and The Red and the Black) is that Mulder and Scully were to removed from the action. As for Cancer Man shooting his own son in the face - man, that was fucking cold!
Monday - The X-Files does Groundhog Day, only with explosions an’ shit. Cool.
The Unnatural/Hollywood A.D. - Yeah, I know Hollywood A.D. is from Season Seven, fuck you. While I have mixed feelings about both of David Duchovny’s episodes, I will say that he brought out a fun, playful side to the Mulder/Scully relationship that I would’ve liked to have seen more of.
Three of a Kind - Sequel to The Unusual Suspects, this time with Scully playing the Gunmen’s sidekick. I was guaran-damn-teed to enjoy this. And I did. Scully should’ve been drugged more often.
Field Trip - I missed this when it first aired on Sky, and finally caught it on BBC1. I thought it was worth the wait.
Biogenesis - At long last, after six seasons, a Panspermia plot finally appears. Though it was quite low-key compared to some previous cliff-hangers, I still got very much into it. I even forgave Scully for getting a little muddled on vertebrate evolution. Still, like Gethsemane before it, this episode suffered for spawning two much less interesting follow-up episodes. Mulder the saviour - Jesus Christ! (More Seinfeld trivia - Brian George, a.k.a. Babu Bhatt appeared as the doctor in Part 3).

A refreshing change of location bringing some new storyline opportunities. The future was beginning to look more optimistic.

RE: x files fans
Seasons Seven Ate (Eight) Nine

I'm lumping the last three seasons together cause I'm knackered. Again. Goddamn it!

Season Seven
Hungry - Mulder does his best Columbo impression on the trail of a mutant with a (very) guilty pleasure - eating brains!
Sein und Zeit/Closure - A lot of fans (rightly) disparage this two-parter for almost retconning the Samantha Mulder story, but it deserves a mention for some haunting visuals and that wonderfully touching final scene.
X-Cops - Season Seven was probably the weakest of all nine seasons, but this episode is still an absolute classic. Loved it!
First Person Shooter - This episode really shouldn't be on my list because it was terrible, but the guest appearance by Krista Allen makes it worth it. I have fond memories of Emmanuelle in Space of Live TV.
Requiem - As much as I enjoyed Season Eight and John Doggett, I still feel this should have been the final episode. It would’ve been the perfect way to close the series (apart from Scully’s unexplained pregnancy, of course).

Season Eight
Within/Without - This was an excellent start to Season Eight. Doggett came across as a decent, dependable character, and Scully’s grief was palpable. The “Mulder was dying” storyline created a large and unresolved plot hole when you think that he must have had said disease during the events of Season Seven’s Je Souhaite, but fuck it, this was awesome!
This Is Not Happening - God, I loved this episode. But Mulder should’ve stayed dead.
Empedocles - The definitive Doggett episode in my eyes. This set up his character, and Monica Reyes’s, so well, and that scene in the field where he realized they’d found his son’s body was genuinely chilling, as was the ending.
Vienen - OK, I still say Mulder should have died, but his chemistry with Doggett in this episode was great.
Alone - A nice, fun Doggett/Mulder uneasy partnership story. And Agent Harrison was both hot and far less annoying than she could’ve been.
Essence/Existence - This would’ve earned a mention for the decapitation scene alone. All of the now extended cast performed well, and it was a genuine thrill ride, even if Billy Miles was a far less scary villain than, say, the Bounty Hunter. The end would’ve been a perfect chance to send Mulder, Scully and William off into the sunset, but hey-ho. Oh, and once again, the biblical shit was grating. If Carter ever does make another movie, STICK TO FUCKING ALIENS!

Season Nine
All of it sucked except for Dæmonicus, John Doe, Audrey Pauley and Release. Oh, and Reyes’s arse.

I’m far to tired at this point to review my opinions on The Truth, and I think a rewatch might be in order anyway. For now, this has been The Master’s Informed and Indispensable opinion on nine seasons of The X-Files. Read, comment and slate if you care. All opinions gratefully accepted. God, I’m tired.

Smell ya tomorrow, guys!

Serious X-Files obsessive here! Way too many favourites to mention, respect to Master for listing his! Any episode Scully cried in usually meant it was a good one! Generally,my favourites were the non 'arc' ones. Most of the people that worked on the X-Files can now be seen in the credits of some of the best shows that are on today which is a testament to the quality of the original show.
Watching Gillian Anderson blossom into the most beautiful and talented actress of her generation throughout the 90's had a serious effect on my formative years! Smile

Cheers for the comments, boys! I can see where Dreamlander and Emmaspuppy are coming from, as the show started out as more of a series of self-contained stories with the complex conspiracy storyline being tacked on later, and the arc stories did become far too confusing (are you listening, Lost producers?). Still, I enjoyed most of them.

I'm a little bummed that Nightprowlers comments got removed, as I had a comeback all ready for them! Ah, C'est la vie.
