Pakistan spot- fixer's sent to jail

I see all the Pakistan spot-fixers were jailed today. It's very ironic of course that none of this would have happened if not for the News Of The World, which is now closed down through it's own misconduct.

i would piss myself laughing if it turned out that the news of the world hacked the pakistanis.

News of the World were very good at making money out of other peoples misery.But, (or should that be Butt) this is a case of doing some good.Pakistan's own board would have turned a blind eye & cricket governing body I.C.C. have always been weak.Let's hope these sentences act as some deterrent.

I can't help think this just takes the piss out of our criminal justice system. The time given to the guilty parties is nearly as much as time given to some rapists! I know they have done wrong and I know they have cheated people but why is the British criminal justice system getting involved and using tax payers money to put to rights what isn't that big a deal in the greater scheme of things!

Spot on Money! These guys essentially took bribes in a sport...I cannot believe the judicial system would deem that worth of years in jail...who are being disadvantaged? It is such a pointless overreaction.

I do agree what they did was wrong, but jail is stupid. A huge fine and a universal ban on sport at any level, in any job, would have made more sense, but they have to make an example of them I guess. I wonder if the punishment would have been the same if Swann etc had done it...no way.

But what about the bookmakers, why do they get away with it all?

There is no extradition laws between Pakistan and England, so I'm surprised they even went to the trial, and just stayed at home.

Yes the punishment would almost certainly have been the same, although possibly higher. If England players had done it I think the sense of outrage would have been greater and the sentences possibly longer.

It is an extreme sentence in my opinion, however the authorities had to set an example and they copped for it.

I would simply have banned them from the sport for life, end of.

Then their careers would have been over. The sensible course of action was to attend the trial and hope to be found not guilty. If they hadn't attended they would never have played at international level again. Maybe they wouldn't have been able to play any kind of cricket ever again. All 3 players are appealing their cricket bans given by the ICC, so not turning up for the criminal trial wouldn't have done them much good.

But they are guilty, that's why Amir and Majeed pleaded guilty before the trial, hoping for lighter sentences.

Butt and Asif's careers are over anyway, with the bans the ICC had imposed, so would not have made a difference to them, and in the grand scheme of things, I bet they would prefer life time bans than jail in a foreign country!

Amir is the only one I have any sympathy for anyway to be honest. He is a young lad who is in a team which had some big characters in it. The likes of Butt and Asif are players he would have looked up to. I'm sure it wouldn't have taken much persuading of the young lad to get him on board.
