Do the Big Clubs get more referee decisions there way than small clubs?

when united have refs palying for them theres no hope for anyone

Many people have tried to prove this but they fail every time, because there are simply no statistics which support it. Attempts to try and prove that big clubs get better decisions are doomed to failure and people shouldn't waste their time on it. However one thing that has been proven is that home teams get better decisions than away teams, so if you're at a game make sure you appeal loudly for any decision you want your team to get, because crowd appeals can and do influence officials. Studies have proven this.

Yeah it is the case when teams play the top 4 at there grounds always hard to get decisions to go your way.

For the Premier League over the last 5 years, here is a list of how many home matches it took each club to concede a penalty. As you can see, away teams got given less penalties at Fulham and Bolton than they did at Arsenal and Man Utd (stats from Opta).

^ Conceeding a penalties must be dependant on how much time the opposition spends in the penalty area,so these stats alone are meaningless.

this is a complete myth born out of inferiority complexes and small-club mentality.

home crowds have far more of an effect on referees’ decisions than ‘big’ clubs ever could. however, bigger clubs attract more attention. more people watch their matches and more people want to have their say.

people have very selective memories when it comes to this subject and manipulate stats (and photos, LODOS!) to suit their purposes. i'll resist the temptation to put Martin Atkinson in a Liverpool shirt!

bigger (or better) teams spend more time attacking – ie. more time in the opponents penalty area – therefore are more likely to get a penalty and vice versa. bigger clubs should get more penalties – in theory. in reality it is about whether a penalty (amongst other incidents) should actually be awarded or not. there is nothing wrong with Manchester United being awarded say, 30 penalties a season – if 30 offences were committed.

if a controversial decision goes the way of the ‘big’ club, more of an issue is made out of it and when looking for a reason, people quickly give the easy excuse – “well the ref clearly favoured the bigger club”. the reason for this mentality could be due to opportunities to beat the better teams being rare, so the underdog requires most ( if not all) of the decisions to go their way. a 50/50 going against the smaller team is harder to take, because they know they might not have another chance for some time.

you are far more likely to remember your team having a goal disallowed in a Cup Final than you would do if it was a league game. the same is true if it happens against a big club. big clubs don’t get more decisions, it’s just that the ones that are given to them stick in the memory.

someone has already made reference to Spurs having a goal disallowed against Manchester United several years ago. it would have been a good win for them, but would not have prevented them from finishing mid-table. QPR, on the other hand, had a goal disallowed against Bolton recently which could result in them getting relegated.

which ‘goal’ do you think people will still be talking about in several years’ time? my money is on the one against United.

If the noise the home crowd makes has an impact on the ref giving them decisions, how come the louder we are at the Hawthorns, the worse the refs seem to get?

People say that there are no stats to back this up, but there are always individual cases which show how bad things are.

I remember Park of Man U, and Paul Robinson when he was still with us, going for a 50-50, and because Robinson dared win it and emerge unscathed, he was sent off. Crap decision, which led to us capitulating 5-0.

everyone can name countless decisions that have gone against them. United went out of the FA Cup two years running because of awful penalty decisions against Portsmouth and Everton, but people only make a fuss if it's the smaller teams that get the rough end of the stick.
