RE: Margaret Thatcher Dead
just been reading something from sheila coleman from the hillsborough justice campaign. she said "from my point of view i respect the dead but unlike margaret thatcher i also respect the living, not many will mourn her loss in liverpool or mining communities across the country". well said sheila, i agree with you!

have your own opinion, lead dont follow.

RE: Margaret Thatcher Dead
Margaret Thatcher will go down as one of the most divisive figures in British history.
She tackled issues of her day with almost brute political force and was in my view very good at tearing down failing structures of state. Where she got things wrong was in her failure to rebuild in such a way that everybody within society could have equal opportunity to benefit from her reforms.
In essence the rich got richer and the poor got poorer and the holy grail of 'choice' to which she was so devoted seemed lost on the most vulnerable in society.
She had to tackle the overwhelming power of the unions but the way it was handled was to do great damage to the mining and steel industries and ultimately did nothing to strengthen communities in which those industries and the deteriorating manufacturing base suffered so much particularly in the West Midlands and North of the UK.
I accept that she tried to instill a culture of entrepeneurship and people taking responsibility for their own lives etc etc but the policies with which she tried to do it only resulted in increased inequality of opportunuty rather than decreased. Profits for shareholders won the day over quality of service and the 'As long as I'm ok, stuff everybody else' attitude won the day.
Far from everybody behaving responsibly school discipline got progressively worse and the modern generation I have come to know seem more arrogant, complacent and possessive of a divine right mentality more so than ever.
"I know my rights" won the day over I know my responsibilities.
Inadvertently or not she helped engender that sort of culture that will be hard to reverse and this is something I find hard to forgive.
For all the considerable good she did in helping to bring an end to the Cold War and the victory to defend the Falkland Islands for me her legacy will be one of Destroyer without capability or willingness to rebuild and reinvigorate areas of the country that badly needed investment.

Agreed. I don't think anyone could realistically expect a different reaction from those areas.

Whilst I can understand why people would take to the streets to celebrate her death, those are battles that have gone, I would much rather they took to the streets protesting about the bedroom tax, the privatisation of our NHS, the slashing of benefits for the most needy in order to finance tax cuts for millionaires or any of the many measures of this extremist government. By all means take a moment of satisfaction at the passing of a demonic figure from the past, but we shoukd be fighting battles that matter NOW because although Thatcher may be gone her disciples continue to implement her doctrine of attacking the poorest members of society. When fairness, justice and compassion are returned to British politics will be the time to really celebrate.

Yes and just aswell that a minutes silience was not forced upon the footballing world or the display of any black armbands. This would have made a complete mockery of it all. It would more likely end up as a minutes jeers ands boo's with the possibilty of singing too just to add to the madness.

A minutes silence should only be reserved for truly unique moments that brings the whole country together and as one, such as the September 11th attacks of 2001. Not for a women that well and truly divided the country.

What makes this death so highly unusual is that unlike no other we've actually many take to the streets in celebration. So there goes the answer as to why one minute silences across the football board are highly unlikely to happen.

It suits me quite nicely when the Southern based media do that. It keeps the North largely free of Cretins looking for weekend homes and leaves the country roads nice & quiet for my enthusiastic weekend drives.

I worked in the City from in the late 80's/early90's building nice shiny offices for all those clowns in red braces and did quite well out of it. Enough to pay for my house (I look out of the window and see nothing but Countryside) and leave a nice little slush fund in the bank so these days i only have to work 5 days a week and i'm home by 4pm every day.

I'll take quality of life over huge salaries any day, thank you very much.

Only 3 things in life are certain. Death, Taxes and lesbians will never look how they do in porn movies.

Couldn't agree more. Happiness, good health (hopefully) and enough money for a decent standard of life. It's certainly a more realistic goal for most folks too.

Why would there be, what did she have to do with football? At Derby football ground last saturday there was a minutes silence for those Philpots kids, but one of them was a Derby fan.
