Music On TV - Documentaries/Live Performances

BBC4 keep showing stuff that's coming on sale - that Bowie gig from Glasto 2000 was on a few weeks back, and then this week a doc on Primal Scream's lost tapes from when they did Give Out But Don't Give Up in Memphis. Denise has weathered better than Bobby or Andrew or Alan McGee (but you'd expect that). Noel Gallagher was a fun inclusion, as he tends to be.

I enjoyed the new doc BBC4 did on the Proclaimers the other week, which I belatedly saw as a nod towards St Andrews Day. The format with David Tennant (!) interviewing Craig & Charlie made a refreshing change from the usual stuff. I was glad they also omitted the 2007 Comic Relief thing - perhaps after they'd discussed the value of that song to them, they didn't need to discuss why they went along with Peter Kay holding them hostage commercially.

BBC4 have been running a series called Our Musical History for a few weeks. The early shows were set to specific genres, but now they're running ones of individual acts, like Stevie Wonder, and tonight I think it's Fleetwood Mac.

TOTP - The Story of 1987
There is a sense here that the stories they tell relate to whomever was willing to talk (unless they're saving Neil Tennant for 1988, which I doubt). "Carol Decker's a catty bitch, she'll do" etc

The follow-on hour of hits was much of the same, though Marti Pellow already seemed on some drug high.

This was quite fun, although I got more amusement from seeing how Copeland clearly went to do most of his interviews, and the other two didn't really sustain that motif. Weymouth did a vid-call with Bootsy Collins, but otherwise it did feel a rather cut & paste show.

Caught up with this. They might as well have called it The First Five Years and had done with it. Good to include Tony Hatch & others, but no Angie? Also no Trevor Bolder footage, the lazy sods. BBC2 repeated the other 2 bits of the trilogy last night, confirming my guess that this film overlapped badly with the first one. I know the Ziggy Years are interesting, but featuring them twice is a bit feeble.

some good stuff on BBC 4 last night the one about Cheiron Studios in sweden was good about of swedish producers and song writers took over the pop world by writing and producing songs for bands like backstreet boys, Nsync and Britney and then how after the founders death went on to have more and more hits

also good series on Dr Dre forgot how bad the political backlash against Gangsta rap was and that was pre internet days as well

Sky Arts have been repeating the 1st series of Brian Johnson's interview show with other rock stars over this weekend, as a prelude to the start of a new series later in the week. Having chatted to such rock gods as Ulrich, Elliott and Plant first time round, his opening show features... Dolly Parton.
