Comet ISON watch (another heavenly body!)

Hopefully next week ( or so ) - it 's just a matter of it surviving it's encounter with the Sun in the next few days.
If it does appear, it will be in the sky until mid-January.

It seems that the full-time result is Sun 1 Comet 0 and it's no more.

The BBC are reporting: "Telescopes saw the giant ball of ice and dust disappear behind the star, but only a dull streamer emerge.

Astronomers continued to search for the object, but it eventually became clear that the much vaunted "Comet of the Century" had gone out with a whimper.

Despite its great size, Ison was probably torn apart in the immense heat and tidal forces so close to the Sun.

The European Space Agency's experts on the Soho Sun-watching satellite called the death of the comet at about 21:30 GMT.

"Our Soho scientists have confirmed, Comet Ison is gone," Esa's twitter feed announced."

Even if it had survived, it wasn't expected to be as spectacular as first thought as it wasn't brightening as expected.

What a waste.

It's weird to think that it was four and a half billion years old - older than the Earth - and had flown goodness knows how many trillions of miles without mishap only to be snuffed out in a matter of hours.
