picture sizes

i have made a logo on photoshop, i saved it as jpeg and the file size was around 217 kb.



the website i am uploading it to wont accept that size of file, the limit is 52 kb,



i can upload in, jpeg,gif,jpg,png



i've tried changing the quality of jpeg when saving but it looks bad on the website when uploaded.



what format will give me the best quality image for the least kb?



any help is much appreciated.

What are the pixel dimensions of the image? In photoshop are you using 'Save As' or 'Save for Web' - the latter is useful for optimising and reducing the kb size of your image.

thanks,i just found the save for web thing, that got it down to size by altering the amount of colours, i also removed the border that was around it.

i think i also made a mistake with the size i made it, when i uploaded as original size, it ended up massive on the screen.

TBH there isn't a hard and fast rule to what format is best (btw jpeg and jpg are the same file type)
A general rule is jpg should normally be smaller for photo style images and png and gif smaller for logos and images with less busy detail (png will almost always be smaller than gif)
Think yourself lucky I normally work in multiple formats. Initial RAW files, Photoshop's own PSD files, TIFF, PNG, and JPEG.

Just a point to consider when saving. Don't save as a JPEG whilst still in the creation/editing as it is a lossy format. Only once you're happy save an extra copy in JPEG.
Seeing as you're only doing stuff for yourself you should be fine with just using the PSD format whilst editing so you can go back and post edit the file in the future if you ever need to then saving an extra copy in whatever format you need when it comes to distributing to other people

thanks for that mate, tips like that help me a lot, i've been saving everything as jpeg cos thats the only one i recognised as a popular type

just so i get this right in my head, lol if i save as psd i can go back and alter layers etc, if i save as jpeg it becomes one image therefore the layers cant be altered, is that correct?

Yup, jpeg is for final display only and should only be used once editing is finished as you will lose some definition. Personally I prefer png for the web despite the file size increase over jpeg as it it lossless and supports alpha transparency
