Plus Supergirls Earth is Earth 38 which means certain events can play out similar but yet be different. The Smallville stuff was a mod and a wink to the show, fan service if you will.

it is paying homage to what has gone before, reeves appeared in smallville which passed the torch on to Tom Welling. The suit at the end was the same suit from superman returns. Hoechin's suit is the same one has the one in the current dc films. In smallville they had teri thatcher playing louis lanes mum, the had dean cain in as a villain with CK has the intials of the name of his character. in supergirl they had laura van der voort who was supergirl in smallville.They have helen slater has the danver mother also Lynda carter who was wonder woman has the president and on Legends they went to the island.

Melissa benoist does look great in the overgirl suit.

^they directly linked the shows by bringing chloe's name into it. that's not just 'paying homage', it's a continuity mistake.
for instance, in the flashback the younger kara and maggie refer to superman. problem is, there was no superman at that point, clark was known as the blur. there is other things but this is why i think it was a mistake. i have no problem with previous smallville actors being in the show but a direct link is problematic.

Actually there is no mistake about Superman if you remember in the pilot where you see the flashbacks of Kara ship crashed on Earth it’s Superman that finds young Kara and takes her to the Danvers family for them to look after if you remember you see Superman reach out with his hand but you never see his face. Through out Season 1 Kara has always complained that ever since she left Krypton that she was always supposed to look after Superman as baby but by the time she got to Earth he had been Superman for years and during the time of her growing its mentioned that Superman whated her to have a normal life where as she wanted to be like Superman.

The important part of that article his own incarnation of that character. When the Ep airs i’ll quite happily post the whole where it shows there not the same show.
