It's just been reported that Phil is now out of surgery but still remains critical

Feel bad for the bowler Sean Abbott too.
He must be feeling terrible - poor fella .

I think to take the bouncer out of the game would be the wrong move, it is the right debate should be about the design of the helmet and what could be done to improve protection of all areas of the skull.

Really hope that Phil recovers and feel bad for the bowler too. We can be thankful that such incidents are rare in cricket, but I am sure he will be told by Phil's family that they don't blame him. When you look at any video, it does look like that Phil was positioning himself to play or pull off the hook shot, but moved too early and was caught out of position at the wrong moment. Not only that, we can be thankful that medical teams are around, whereas when Peter Lever struck Ewan Chatfield in '74 or '75 helmets weren't part of the game.

Latest news on Phil is that he's still critical.

Just breaking news that he has died from his injuries

A sad day for cricket in general and Cricket Australia. Thoughts, prayers and condolences to Phil's family, friends, team mates and also to Sean Abbott who is going to need just as much support to get through this. Sean did absolutely nothing wrong except bowl a ball that caused a freak accident which in cricket is rare, but ultimately when it happens, it can have devastating consequences.
Phil averaged in 25 one-­day internationals 35.91, in Test cricket it stood at 32.65. In first-class cricket, in which he scored 26 hundreds, he averaged 46.51. A top score of 243 not out for Australia A versus South Africa A in August 2014 showed how much more he could achieve to be one of Australia's best. RIP Phil. A fine opening batsman.

Woke up to see the horrific news of Phil death.
He never regained conciousness after the injury.

This is a desperately sad day for cricket and for sport in general.
My heart goes out to the family of Phil Hughes, his friends and Sean Abbott too.
Goodness knows what Abbott must be thinking at the moment but it was not his fault. This was a freak incident and the bowler was bowling a ball that is bowled as standard in all forms of the game.

A lot of people will say that the bouncer should be taken out of the game, but it is part of the fast/medium bowler's armoury and Phil was a recognised opening batsman, and the laws on bouncers are tight enough as they are. If you take the bouncer out of the game altogether, then the you reduce the fast bowler's effectiveness whether any changes to the ball can be made is another question. But ultimately it is a freak accident in cricket when it happens.
