Basically is as it sounds. For example Berahino would not have a leg to stand on if he were to make good on his threats. If that were to happen Peace could sue him.

Also how could you prove that a player was just running down his contract? For example in the case of Adebayor he could say he kept his end of the bargain. He turned up to training etc was willing to play
But his manager decided to chose other players ahead of him.

That's a good story.

Bogarde was with Chelsea for 4 years and lived for 2 years in Windsor and for 2 years at Chelsea Harbour.

Claims he flew in for training from the Netherlands each morning are flatly denied. "Of course it's not true. I don’t understand why people tell these ridiculous lies".

Indeed. And looking at it from the other point of view, if a club took the 'let him rot in the reserves' stance, the player could theoretically leave and claim constructive dismissal. It's a bit of a tightrope for both parties, that is the nature of contracts.

It's not just a good story it's a great one. In regard to Chelsea and their players I can believe anything. The times ran that story at the time ;just can't trust anybody
He probably commuted twice and the papers exaggerated it. The main point of my post was to illustrate that there is nothing new in Adebayor's mercenary behaviour by a player

That's the problem with law. A lot of the statutes cancel each other out.
At the end of the day if a player went head to head with his owner it would probably be a case of who has the better lawyer.

Because it isn't necessary. Footballers contracts are very strict anyway and any misbehaviour can result in a sacking. There are so many things that can be deemed misconduct by clubs that footballers can have their contracts cancelled very easily if they don't respect them. Only a few months ago Leicester sacked 3 players for that video that made the news. West Brom sacked Anelka not so long ago. Chelsea sacked Mutu and Bosnich for taking drugs. Even being unfit or overweight has been a reason for a player being sacked, as has drunk driving, causing an accident by exceeding the speed limit and confronting a spectator in the stands.

There's nothing wrong in running down a contract by the way. Nor is being unfit a case of misconduct unless it's the player's own fault. But deliberately not making any effort would definitely be a sackable offence, although could be hard to prove. Anything that brings a club into disrepute is gross misconduct and grounds for immediate contract cancellation.
