TalkTalk Cyber attack
Absolutely shocking that Talk talk's Website was subject to it's Third Cyber attack and it is thought up to 4 million UK customers (possibly me included) have had their personal data stolen

Allegedly a ransom note was sent to Talk Talk's head office yesterday and German Websites are reportedly releasing customer's details

It is going to get to the point when people I feel will start turning their backs on using company websites for booking holidays paying bills and such if companies are not doing more to secure customers personal details

for a company of Talk Talk's sheer size a third successful hack in a YEAR - to me - does show up the exact level of competence the company has in keeping customer secure data and to say the least it will be weeks or months before customers will find their details were accessed.

I'm at the point where I am thinking about probably leaving Talk Talk and either going back to either Virgin Media or BT again as I feel that three security breaches does show up to me how lax Talk Talk's data security policy really is and also wondering if the time has come for call centre jobs in India to come back to the UK as well.
How did you guys feel about the news of this cyber attack?

RE: TalkTalk Cyber attack
I have had only 2 phone calls over the last couple of years from people claiming to be talktalk saying there are issues with my internet connection, I just hang up.

I always check my bank accounts on a regular basis anyway so I am not worried. I will be changing my talktalk account password when it the site is back up.

Its fucking mind boggling that talk talk are saying that none of the customers detail especially the banking details of clients were not Encrypted !!! least make it a bit harder for hackers to get the information. think every company should be enforced to encrypt personal data

No point if banks spend millions and millions and even billions on cyber defences when someone can steal data from else where and use it a financial system is only good as its weakest link

Sky broadbands been playing up for me a few times this week starting to think maybe fishy is going on there as well

Mind you doesnt surprise me about Talk Talk owned by Carphone warehouse which is now owned b Dixons Store groups as an ex-employee of DSG they do everything on the cheap Wink

This latest data security breach may open the way for a mass legal case where Talk Talk are sued.

Im sure the banks will sue talk talk for any losses they take because talk talk didnt take reasonable steps to protect the data

At which point would any ordinary man or woman would be in position to sue?

RE: TalkTalk Cyber attack
^ surely a class action? I am furious and have cancelleled my bank card as a precaution.

They screwed me over earlier this year over broadband migration to fibre and left me with no internet for nearly 3 weeks and gave me £16 "compensation".

The Indian call centre people are like scripted robots no help at all. The customer service is diabolical. They literally don't sound like real humans, more like androids.

I want to leave and switch to Sky or BT but fear:

1) being in 4 hour queues for the call centre
2) the switch being botched leaving me with no internet yet again.

your able to sue at any point mate as long as you can afford to. most people would do it in a class action though and as a result will have less outlay but also less compensation.

RE: TalkTalk Cyber attack
Can't say I'm that concerned just yet, I'll start worrying when I feel I have reason to. If my bank details leak out, I will be covered for any fraudulent losses, and I generally ignore and block anyone phoning me that I don't know, and ignore spam emails, so really no point losing sleep just yet.
If I feel the need to jump ship (which is quite possible), and am able to given that I just recently started a new 18month contract, I'd be inclined to try Plusnet (I'm stuck with copper cables, full fibre to the premises like Virgin isn't really an option for me at the moment). I'm no fan of BT after they screwed me over several years back, and although Plusnet is part of BT, it's also run separately. It benefits from having access to the BT infrastructure, but has UK call centres, and generally gets a far better customer support rating than the likes of BT.

What does make me laugh is the way the issue of encryption is being reported. Coming not long after the Snowdon revelations about the NSA trying to enforce backdoors in encryption protocols and software, now there is incredulity that information here may not have been encrypted. So what do we want, proper secure encryption that really protects our data, or weak, exploitable encryption with 'secret' backdoors, supposedly to 'protect us from terrorism'.
If it turns out that the data was un-encrypted, or at best weakly protected, as has been the case with some other recent hacks, I do wonder if TT may fall foul of the Data Commissioner for failing to adequately protect customer data. Being hacked seems to be a fact of life for big corporations these days, and allegedly happens far more than we are aware of, but leaving your customer data readily accessible to those hackers is pretty unforgivable.
