RIP Ed "Stewpot" Stewart
Just seen the news that former Radio 1 DJ and presenter of crackerjack has died aged 74

After crackerjack he did the junior choice request show on radio 1. I remember as a 4 year old having a record played and winning a pen. RIP Ed

Sad You know you're getting old when the people you grew up with start dying....

It's often forgotten that Ed Stewart nearly ended up a commentator on Match of the Day. He'd done some sports commentary in his first radio job in Hong Kong and when, in 1970, the BBC held a competition to find a new commentator to augment their MOTD team for the forthcoming World Cup Stewart entered, along with more than 10,000 others.

Stewpot got to the final six, alongside the likes of future ITV pundit Ian St John and Gerry Harrison, who went on to become Anglia ITV's regional commentator for many years.

However, they all lost out to a supposed "unknown" by the name of Idwal Robling. Robling had indeed been a sales manager at a sweet factory in Newport but he had in fact also been covering sport for both The Times and BBC Wales for a number of years!!
