I walk to the pub and back about 5 times a week, does that count for anything?

I go to the gym usually 3-4 times a week. One of those days will be cardio. Im not really interested in running and find it very boring on a treadmill but do it to keep kinda fit.

Im here for a good time, Not a long time !

RE: Who likes going running/jogging then?
Hi everyone thanks for the feed back Smile

I'm afraid I've been hit finacially as i didn't quaify for working tax credits this year so the babechannels are a vice I've had to give up - even if it's just for a good few months.
Really missing chatting with Emma D cos she's just brilliant to get on with. Nice that we stay in touch via private messaging though.
It also means i need to stay off the the forum so I'm not spending too much time on her when I should be out training- you may have noticed I'm barely around these days?
I'm concentrating on training and re-kindling friendships in my town.
Running has gone really well and I mentored two friends who recently completed a 10k run for the 1st time - they were so proud, it was brilliant to share in their enthusiasm. we're even closure friends than ever through our shared hobby Wink
Nicky has been the real surrise out of the two because she did the 10k again the very next day and completed her first ever 10 mile run a week or so later, with me at her side motivating her - although she seems motivated enough. She's really taken my advice on nutrition seriously, says it's made a real improvement and I'm so proud of her!

Today, after getting back into running since May 1st, I attempted my first ever half marathon in my home town. It pissed down showers a few times, my nipples are bleeding from my wet running top, my socks got soaked so rubbed and I now have a BIG blister.
Dispite these minor set backs, it was my leg muscles that gave out at around the 18 mile mark. My cardio is excelent right now and the half marathon was quite comfortable & even enjoyable, but the following 6.7 miles gradually declined into a slog.
Still, it was 6.7 miles further than I've ever run before and I'm immensely proud at how hard I tried.
20.3 miles is something I'm astonished to have achieved today Smile

I'm up for work at 7am and I'm a little nervous about being able to walk, ha ha! That marathon distance won't elude me forever and it's good to have something possitive to focus on. Keeps my mind off various personal problems too.
Well, I hope the regulars here are doing okay?
Take care everyone and enjoy the rest of your weekend.

You may of just motivated me to start running again Paul. I used to love it but was forced to stop after a sports injury. I have a bit of a mental issue that the problem with my back may resurface or, I could just be plain lazy. Enjoy your time away Paul

RE: Who likes going running/jogging then?
Hi Josh, I read in a running magazine that eating porridge 3 hours before jogging puts glucose into your liver (or something like that? i was in a hurry, lol)
But it's truly made a massive difference that both myself and my friends have felt impressed with when they tried it too.
Also, a bag of microwaved Bird's Eye Steam Fresh veg maybe an hour and a half before and then a pint of water or certainly a bottle of Lucozade Sport an hour before the run makes for superb nutrition before hand.
A carb shake 20 mins before too -I use Ultra Life products- followed by an Ultra Life protien shake straight afterwards so that my body doesn't take the fuel from my muscles.
I lost a lot of size rapidly last year because I'd been ignorant of the fact that your body won't just burn fat for fuel.

Hope this helps you out? It's certainly doing the trick for me Smile
Start off at 2 mile flat surface runs.
Asics gel trainers are brilliant with Run 360 socks.
Lucozade Sport is currently £3 for 6 bottles from iceland. Thats the cheapest I've found it anywhere.

As for your back... yeah I worry to the point of over caution about my joints and spine. I stretch out my back like crazy before a run. My neighbour tends to struggle with his spine so I started stretching it first to avoid his type of discomfort.
So I only sprint when doing the 2.47 flat course near my home to save my joints and muscles any future discomfort.
After maybe 6 weeks of practice, I can now flat out sprint full speed for 1.2 miles and then a leasurely jog home. But I'm so careful not to pound the pavement or curbs. that's why I use asics gel filled as they claim to absorb a lot of impact.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend. If you've any tips or advice for me then I'd certainly appreciate it Smile

RE: Who likes going running/jogging then?
I used to love running when I was in high school.Always top 5 in my year in cross country runs and I wasn't even trying.Ah,the fitness of youth! The teachers would often get frustrated that I never took it further because of my love of playing football.Smile Running didn't seem anywhere near as important at the time.I didn't see the point of running continuously around the football pitches, wearing football boots and not having a football to kick! Smile I would like to start again as since being made redundant from a very physical job I have become so unfit. Not overweight unfit but just serious lack of muscle strength and stamina unfit.
My Dad walks/runs most nights after work so I may join him.Unfortunately another side effect of not working is that my lower back problem has resurfaced now that the muscles around it have got weak and can no longer mask the discomfort.
I do love my car though! Cycling may be a worthy compromise for me.I've got a hardly used Orange mountain bike that cost £800 and isn't money well spent when it is hanging in my attic lol! Smile

RE: Who likes going running/jogging then?
I think it's excellent what you are doing keep it up whether we like it or not or believe it or not there are great benefits in keeping fit & having goals. Good luck with the training & good luck with the Marathon. People should be positivley encouraged to do something.

I do find jogging borning & started to hurt my knees when on concrete. It was also starting to hurt my boobs/nipples a bit because I couldn't always find my sports bra or I'd left it at the gym lol. However I have done 'Race for Life' a couple of times & recently the 'Midnight Walk'. I would love to do 'The Great North Run' which I believe is a 'half marathon' ? ( someone correct me if i'm wrong), I think the London Marathon would be awesome but I reckon it would take me ages & I'd probably collapse.

I go to the Gym 2 or 3 times a week, I swim about the same & I do like to cycle in good weather. I walk a lot to as I don't drive. So I think I'm doing reasonably ok despite my vices of alcohol the odd crafty 'sociable' smoking & curries ;-)

Enjoy.
