RE: New Years Honours List
Many of them already do pay with donations to political parties or just having influential friends in political circles. Honours should be treated in the same way military medals are awarded and only given to those who have proved themselves and under no circumstances should political donors be considered.

Personally I'd get rid of them all together.

Out of interest who do you think should get one?

RE: New Years Honours List
I have no issue with people being recognised for their efforts or contributions in helping to improve society or mankind, people who have made a real difference such as Edward Jenner and Winston Churchill or Ian Botham who has raised over 50 million for charity are fully deserving of their awards but people such as nick clegg, neil kinnock, mick jagger or andy murray have done nothing to have such honours bestowed upon them. I would hardly describe myself as a royalist but i am pretty sure the Queen must be appalled at some of the names on the list she is given each year.

Political honours are notoriously the lowest of the low. Stick around the Commons long enough and you get a Knighthood even if you did fuck all (so to speak).

June Sarpong getting a gong under Blair remains my vote for the most ludicrous.

RE: New Years Honours List
Politicians should never be given honours just for doing a job they are already being well paid for unless they have made an outstanding and proven contribution to this country, and even then the public should be allowed a veto if they are not happy with the award. That would stop all the backhanders and gongs for the boys awards. Sportsmen and celebrities would also be barred from being nominated unless they too had made a real difference and not just become rich and famous.

And as for the most ludicrous award i still think cameron's barber beats june sarpong.

Vince Cable, Danny Alexander, and now Nick Clegg. The 3 Lib/Dem stooge's have got their rewards for being puppets to the CONservative party. It just shows how low these so called politicians can go to line their deep pockets. A Nick Clegg knighthood is a new low, its time these jollies for politicians were flushed down the toilet.

RE: New Years Honours List
The Lib/Dems were never puppets they and the Tories used each other as a convenient excuse for failing to implement their own parties election promises. In the end the libs turned out to be just another bunch of career politicians more interested in feathering their nests than making a difference. The party paid a heavy price for their treachery at the 2015 election but hey ho its as you say, at least the three stooges came out on top.

RE: New Years Honours List
Who would really want a fucking knighthood anyway? Might just might get you a better table at a restaurant but that is it, and that is debatable...

A Peerage is the only one worth having.

RE: New Years Honours List
In the past a knighthood was always seen as a symbol of honour and chivalry, usually given to people who had proved themselves worthy to serve and protect the people ( think Knights of the Round Table ). A peerage on the other hand is associated with privlage, wealth and entitlement ( think the house of lords ). In the past many lords did actually have the best interests of the people at heart but now the place is just full of greedy scum. Over time both titles have been devalued to such an extent they are now seen as a sign of establishment corruption and elitism.

Personally i would rather be a Knight than a lord.

RE: New Years Honours List
To my mind the honours system is outdated and not fit for purpose.
Partly used as a rewarding and bribery tool for political cronies which doesn't help matters.

Getting honoured by the state in my view should by definition be a privilege reserved for the few based on one single trait.
A proven willingness to engage in selfless and sacrificial activity for the exclusive benefit of others in danger or less fortunate rather than to the benefit of oneself.

And that's pretty much it.
Getting honoured just for doing ones job well or a perception to that effect is no sort of valid criteria at all imo.

Be an absolute Saint or bog off bladewave.
