Wink THE Cartoon/Animation thread (Discussion)
Hi there folks Wink

Well I've been thinking about this idea for a while now and I've finally decided to do it. This thread will be all about cartoons and animation and will be made up of three things:

1) Discussion-what were your favourite cartoons or animated films-this can be anything from Hanna-Barbera, Walt Disney, Animé or other. Why did you like it? Did it ever influence you at all? What did cartoons mean to you?

2) Help thread: This is for you to help out another member who might have a question about a particular cartoon series or character. If you can answer a burning question like What was being sung in the Top Cat opening tune(Boss Cat here in the UK) or indeed why was it called Boss Cat here? Anything like that.

3) Trivia. We all like a bit of that so perhaps you have some that you'd like to impart to the rest of us. I've got loads but I want you to put yours here.

Rules. Sorry but you must allow others a chance to answer so no images or video clips please as they push others answers up and I doubt you'd want to scroll all morning-but you can post a small thumbnail picture to illustrate what cartoon you are talking about but not so,big as it takes up the whole page please.

Like the idea! go ahead post away and I will do my best to answer any questions too my speciality is Hanna-Barbera so you can expect some good stuff.

Cheers and enjoy...that's all folks! GM

Okay don't all rush Big Grin I'll give you an idea.
Firstly:
1) My favourite cartoons were by Hanna-Barbera & Warner Brothers as I found Disney just a bit too twee. I think it was the anarchic stuff that appealed with (although not all like Tom and Jerry) Warner Brothers, like Daffy Duck, Bugs Bunny and Yosemite Sam to name but three. Hanna-Barbera was either teenagers solving mysteries OR superheroes which also appealed.

2) The first line for Boss Cat(Top Cat) was "Top Cat...the most effectual top cat...whose intellectual close friends get to call him TC, pro-vid-ing its with dig-nity"

3) Top Cat was based on Phil Silver's character Ernest Bilko, a Master Sergeant in the Army who always used to scam his fellow soldiers and come up with money-making schemes which usually failed. Top Cat was the same to the chagrin of his main protaganist Officer Dibble. There was another character who was a fast-talking con-artist(or wisenheimer as the Americans say) called Hokey Wolf who had a short sidekick called Ding-A-Ling.

There, now that wasn't so painful, so over to you. Ask away or post.

Got to be this one for starters orders...was probably responsible for sowing the first seeds of my interest in Martial Arts. That and as I stated in another thread, got me into trouble at school one day when I was supposed to be getting the whack with the ruler!

Cheers Carl. The man who played the Sergeant was Joe E Ross and he was Sergeant Rupert Ritzik in the afore-mentioned Bilko AND he was also the voice of Butch(Butsch) in Help! It's The Hair Bear Bunch!. Voice of Penry(Penrod) Pooch or Hong Kong Phooey was jazz singer 'Scatman' Crothers. I'd say the voice was spot on.

Scatman Crothers provided the voice for Autobot "Jazz" in seasons one and two of The Transformers(1984/1985) and then again in the animated movie(1986).It was his last work I think before he died.

Name inspired by Frank Sinatra from 'Strangers in the Night' although it should be dooby, dooby doo - Hanna-Barbera changed it and the rest is history. I think it is still the longest running cartoon in the world and has evolved several times including in LEGO!

Surprised you didn't think Warner Bros merited a place on the poll. They were always my favorites as a kid.

Bugs
Daffy
Elmer Fudd
Sylvester
Tweety
Road Runner
Wile E Coyote
Speedy Gonzales
Taz

And probably others that escape me now.

Truth is I forgot to add it and I can't adjust it now. I do however refer my honourable friend to post number 2 first example and that does mention Warner Bros. You have some excellent choices there, although Fritz 'Friz' Freleng owned the rights to a number of characters like Yosemite Sam and Sylvester. Friz teamed up with David H DePatie and created other cartoons like The Pink Panther. It would also explain why Sylvester was often teamed with Speedy Gonzales. The only character that failed to take off was a Foghorn Leghorn, a wisecracking Rooster.

The trilogy of Bugs and Daffy cartoons avoiding Elmer whilst trying to outdo each other is just the best stuff and one of my favourite Daffy Duck cartoons is Robin Hood Daffy. Lines like "...with my trusty quarter staff; actually it's a buck and a quarter quarter staff but I'm not telling him that." The scene where he tries to liberate a traveller of his purse by swooping down is just hilarious as he keeps hitting tree after tree after shouting "yikes! and away"
