ICC Cricket World Cup 2019

England have announced their 15 squad.

Joe Denly and David Willey have been left out and Jofra Archer and Liam Dawson have been included.

Dawson's the big surpise as he didn't play any games in the warm up matches against Pakistan

Excited for the World Cup.
Knew Archer would be in the squad the min he was called up to the last squad.

England have spent the last 4 years getting together a settled squad and preparing for this world cup, which up to now have gone extremely well. Then along comes Archer and all that goes out the window, if i was David Willey i would be seriously pissed off.

David Willey must be fuming

David Willey has earned his place with his performances over the last few years, Archer has done nothing and simply walked into the squad on the basis of a season in the IPL. It's another case of England stealing another countries player.

Hope it doesn't backfire...

David Willey is good at the start of the innings, where he is one of the best at swinging the ball. Being a left hander also helps. But this swing only lasts for his first 4 overs.
After that he is just a fast medium bowler who can be hit.

It was a close decision between him, Woakes and Curran. But the selectors could have also selected Broad or Jordan

I think Woakes was always sure of his place.

As for Broad and Jordan, neither has played an ODI for England since 2016, so I think selection of either was unlikely. Jordan has at least been playing T20s for England, so isn't completely out of the picture.

If you just concentrate on the ODIs against Pakistan, the stats make interesting reading.

The figures below show the bowlers used with the number of runs conceded per wicket taken (RPW), The number of balls needed to take each wicket (BPW) and the total of the two stats.

Root, Denly and Stokes also bowled but didn't take a wicket, so don't generate these stats.

A small sample size, admittedly, but Woakes, Curran, Wood, Plunkett and Archer, in that order, are clearly ahead of Willey in the seaming category. The figures for Rashid and Ali are clearly worrying, as is the fact that Stokes didn't take a wicket from 17 overs. Stokes also had the lowest strike rate of the top 7 in the batting order at 98 runs per 100 balls.

We need Ali and Rashid (and Dawson, if played) to take more wickets more economically, and our gun all-rounder to come up to the plate.
