I don't usually agree with Clive Woodward's views, but today he was right in contributing to the yellow/red card debate! It isn't as simple as - with respect - Lol tried to make it seem, and is - as Woodward said - heavily contextualised, when you factor in all the moving parts involved in a collision, and the point of contact! One example that may have resulted in a red card was where the ball carrier actually caused the 'high' collision by how he collided with the defending player, but the defending player was the one likely to face the sanction!

I have an issue with some of the high ball examples also...….. A player - ball in hand - puts up the Garryowen - a contest ensues where that same player jumps into the receiving player - in my view looking to instigate the outcome that would/could led to a card - the receiving/defending player has nowhere to go, and the contact results in the advancing player falling to ground on his head/neck! Likely a straight red??

Having now seen the incident for myself in slow I can now see where Sir Clive is coming from!! It does look like the impact from Yato is significant, but at the same time Hodge's reaction probably gives a different viewpoint. Yato must be what somewhere in the 17 - 18 stone region and Hodge a couple of stone lighter nd he's trying to stop him. It probably did look serious from one angle but probably to many was it any worse than the tackle that got Scott Barrett sent off?

Any comment on England performance?

World Rugby needs to have some sort of emergency video conference with the international head coaches either during this World Cup or after it and sort out the inconsistency that exist in this area. While I agree that the laws as they stand are designed to protect player from serious injury and I applaud that - but certain parts of the law needs to be looked at so that there is no further inconsistency, but is it down to how the referee interprets the law that is the issue that causes the confusion?

Problem is that it is essentially seen as black and white!! As C Woodward suggests, it isn't that simple! The 'mitigating circumstance' is too narrow, and relies on subjective referee interpretation!!

And I would say that referee interpretation is the bit that causes the most problems

That would Hand them a 'Straight jacket' though, and you no longer have rugby!! That would lead to cards all over the show, and no mitigation!

In your opinion then was Hodge's situation no worse then Barett's red card?
