VAT on Digital Platforms

Onlyfans couldn't be bothered to explain the VAT thing but looks like it's tax on top of what the girls charge, rather than included, so the girls don't lose money.

a girl on twitter did mention that it's apparently illegal to charge VAT on tips, in the UK.

if as it appears that onlyfans are not taking their 20% out of the extra charge for pure profit. Then in one sense the girls don't lose out but in laymen's terms they do
When you think about it for them to keep the same level of income coming in they have got to charge 20% more
So instead of getting 80% of the charges whether that is by tip, ppv or subscription their effective cut is now 66.67%
They will also lose out because i imiagine they will get less subscriptions etc anyway

not surprised its happened, i'm actually surprised it didn't happen a long time ago as adultwork started charging vat in 2015
Adultwork did it differently, they didn't add 20% on to the fee they reduced the amount the girl took
presumably that mean instead of charging 12.00 like onlyfans to to give the girl 8.00
they still charged 10.00 but the girl took home 6.00 as she would have to pay 20% vat and 20% of her charge to adultwork.
if i am correct, the girl took the hit both as a percentage and in cash terms (and a bigger hit than onlyfans) but the customer didn't pay any more
Whereas under the onlyfans model: whilst the model didn't technically lose income, she loses out in percentage wise etc but not as much but the customer loses out.

Strange as according to HMRC Tips and other gratuities are not subject to VAT so looks like OF are fleecing people. Plus OF now need to send us valid VAT receipts if they are charging us VAT same as any other company you buy something from either online or physically.

Plus having a message about it the day they are doing it is shite, the same as when they changed their terms of service recently and sent messages after they had changed them

Completely agree, I got the message yesterday, the day before it comes into effect, that was a real dick move. Just further evidence that their customer service is complete and utter dog shit

Also, it costs me $1.15 in VAT on a $5 tip as VAT in Ireland is 23%
