The UK government didn't secure any exemption. All they got was a clarification that the Presidential executive order only applies to individuals travelling from one of the 7 named countries.

The Canadian government had been given the same clarification 15 hours earlier.

I think any clarification he does give will only further cloud the real issue but if he wants a deal with us he'll have to agree to freedom of movement for all British citizens IMO unless he wants to see the US holiday packages business go down the pan
I bet more people will now go to Canada for this summer and while I'm thinking about it why don't our Government retaliate by banning US sportsmen & women from competing in Britain until he lifts it?

To be fair, the petition doesn't call for the visit to be cancelled as such or Trump to be banned.
It states that Trump can visit as US President, but that it should not be done as a State visit, which includes meeting the Queen.
It also makes no reference to the immigration policies, I believe it was put up before then (polls run for 6 months, and this ones deadline is 29 May, which would mean it was started last year), those policies simply made it more popular :
