I don’t recall any of those having a self-indulgent musical as the penultimate episode.

With the current strike it could be a long time until the show returns.

^^^ that’s nothing to do it season 2 was always planned a cliffhanger most shows do of recent Superman and Lois Season 3 had a cliffhanger. Even if they didn’t do a musical Ep would it still have been a cliffhanger yes, worse yet what if had do the eps the other way round.
The whole point of a cliffhanger is to get you come back for more. The Best of Both Worlds Picard is taken by the Borg and then it ends with a face off between Picard and Riker then it ends on the anticipation of what’s gonna next and having to wait severall months for resolution. If people didn’t like the musical Ep that’s but would rather the season finish off with strong ending which it delivered.

Stupid question, but I take it they film both or however many parts together for these types of finale, rather than filming part one and waiting until they start filming again to make part two, it'll be written in full I assume. Something I've been wondering with sci-fi shows, talky non effect based shows it won't matter.

^ The Original first transmission dates for “The Best of Both Worlds” parts 1 & 2 were only a few months apart (June 18th/September 24th 1990) so they were likely filmed together or as close as makes no difference.

Cliffhangers are so old hat these days. Make a decent show and people will watch it even when it has an off day.

Most of time with tv shows the finale and the next part are filmed at the same time sometimes what they do is they come back for pick up shoots so if a actor or actresses has a hair cut for example they try to match it up with wigs or har extensions. Star Trek Strange New Worlds Season 1 and 2 were filmed at the same time. A give away in most shows is in the next couple eps certain characters have slight changes to there appearance. As for cliffhangers it’s a formula thar most shows still use and works to get people excited for the next series or even movies it’s being used to get people hooked back you only have to look at Avengers Infinity War as a perfect example.

RE: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds
I did read yesterday that one the people in charge wants twenty episodes a season (the fact they filmed one and two together would mean it's definitely doable), said they could do around ten seasons, so once the strike is over, hopefully we'll see something more about that. I get that a lot of shows that stream do eight or ten, but fuck me, it's far too short for Star Trek, they could do so much more with a longer season.

^ Even if 20-plus wasn't possible, 13 to 16 episodes would be good, could throw in some two or three parters too, they are always standout episodes in Star Trek, even among the less good Trek shows like Enterprise or Voyager. Voyager had some of the best two-parters in all Trek and the Enterprise two/three partners in series 4 were excellent, brought the show up several gears. Would be cool to see SNW do something like that.

Well they’ve canned Discovery so maybe they can use the budget to make a few more episodes of SNW because even its worst episodes are infinitely better than the adventures of Spinny Ship Tongue

I agree that it should be longer but it’s not gonna get 20+ eps firstly because of steaming format where it’s shorter seasons, there’s a podcast on YouTube called Shuttlepod and it’s run by two of the actors that were on the show Enterprise on one of there shows they mention that it won’t go back to the 20+ Ep format I highly recommend subbing to them secondly it’s also because of the budget why it’s shorter.
All tho Discovery has been cancelled it’s replacement is Star Trek Academy, on one of podcats on Shuttlepod they can only afford to do at least 2 or possible 3 live tv shows at a time because of money and it would be at least 10 Eps that’s why we haven’t seen anything on a possible Star Trek Legacy show. The show runner of Star Trek Picard Terry Matalas even said there’s been a lot support for Star Trek Legacy and they are listening but can’t do it at the moment.
