RE: Football Banter
Quite right Bigguy, Yoda, GroundnPound et al! I didn't see the match yesterday, but the fact that it was played at 11:30am suggests that alcohol may have had less to do with it than some may claim to put the blame on it. Unless these idiots went to the match straight from the pub on Saturday night !
I certainly don't partake in any of that crap, and neither do the Liverpool lads on this forum; I find it uncomfortable when a group of people around me do sing songs of that nature and it certainly is a minority thing as fewer and fewer are doing it nowadays thankfully.
On a not-dissimilar point I, and all others I spoke to at Old Trafford on Saturday tee-time, received a text the night before the Arsenal match asking all fans - on behalf of Alex Ferguson - to refrain from personal abuse (meaning Arsene Wenger and that song) and to instead focus on supporting the team etc...
It seemed to work too, as I never once heard said song so maybe football is getting its house in order regards crossing the boundaries of acceptability regards songs and chants at matches

RE: Football Banter
Very True Regen! However, whilst we are far from perfect here in Britain, let's not forget that there is much worse going on all around Europe.
We often hear of coloured England players, whether playing at some form of international level or for their clubs in European club competition, being subjected to racist taunts and chants as well as objects being thrown from the crowds. Far too many fans in countries as far afield as Spain, Italy, the former Yugoslav nations, Greece and across the former Soviet Union are guilty of these acts which should have no place in football.
Worse still, the national associations and even worse, FIFA and UEFA seem to condone said acts by handing out derisory token fines, and even then as a gesture after complaints have been lodged, which hardly serves to stamp out such behaviour.
Like I say, whilst anyone who goes to football acknowledges that isolated incidents do still occur regards unacceptable chanting and singing, the problems are far more widespread and elsewhere around the world, and far less is being seen to be done to address the issues.
