War isn't good for the environment, I think that's obvious, and given how careless the Russians are, they will be doing some harm.

I am very worried about how much Ukraine will have to give up for peace, both in land and in future plans. NATO isn't likely until Putin is six feet under.

Zelenskyy said in the first week that they would have to be pragmatic to get any sort of agreement.

Realistically, Crimea & the Donbass are lost causes and have been for the best part of 8 years. The Ukrainians could go all out & try to retake them but that would make what we've seen so far look like a minor disagreement.

As much as it sticks in my throat, Putin has to be given a way out. He can claim victory to anyone who will listen to him in Russia but the truth is that his Conventional Forces have been shown to be a Paper Tiger and if it wasn't for his nuclear capability this would have been a very different operation indeed. Also, he can't keep his guard up forever and there will be some very capable and very pissed off Units in Ukraine right now and they'll be coming home at some point in the future.

What way out would you suggest we the West offer him?

Then again there would be many who feel the only way out offered would be a single bullet to the head

The situation with Putin being able to save face is a bit like The Cuban Missile crisis, where The US & USSR were negotiating through back channels & Kennedy agreed to dismantle its missiles in Turkey and give Krushchev a win. It may take more than just Donbass & Luhansk in order for Putin to claim a victory, he may want to go all the way to Crimea, linking the ethnically Russian regions with Russia itself. Such an agreement would include the cities of Mariupol & Melitopol, I wonder how that would go down in those cities having faced such heavy shelling & devastating loses ?

How would such a deal go down in Ukraine altogether ? Would a compromise with the enemy that allowed it to annex your country & give Putin a win be seen as a betrayal by a country that despite all it has faced is still in a stand and fight mood ?

What would be the price that Ukraine would pay beyond the physical annexation for giving Putin a victory that he does not deserve but Ukraine desperately needs ?
