There was no defending a chemical attack on civilians, so in that respect, taking out the airbase responsible was the right thing to do.
The cynic in me doesn't like the timing though, this was decided while hosting the Chinese, so, right thing or show of strength?

Anyway, I expect Russia having a problem with this will be interesting for Trump, as they were already being less supportive of him.

There are many Republicans defending Trump including his replacement to lead the inquiry. The problem Nunes brought upon himself is that he sneaked off to the White House to be given supposed evidence that Trump and Co had been spied upon by Obama but then refused to reveal what he'd been given and gave an interview backing Trump on the basis of this supposed evidence. For someone leading a bi-partisan inquiry that was plain wrong.

I think you're spot on pal, it's a show of strength, Trump the 'strongman' and in that sense this action is as much aimed towards Nth Korea, Iran etc as Syria

trump couldn't care less about the victims of the chemical attack. putin likes a strongman, trump is being a strongman. also the timing is hella suspicious. right when china are visiting and kim jong un is no doubt watching on. there was no downside to this action so it was a completely cynical move and should be seen for what it is.
