I've got no problem with the US taking the fight to Syria and ISIS, what's worrying, as you say, is the fact its in complete contradiction to his campaign pledges and apparently he's changed his mind so quickly and radically.....just looks like knee jerk decisions with no thought as to the long term strategy

Be a bit like Iraq going in hard but have no exit strategy but the trouble the longer the Russians fund Assad the more dangerous and complicated it will be for Trump that if he puts troops on the ground the more difficult it will be to get them out without the exit strategy in place

^ I think Trump's problem is he's lost confidence in Bannon because of the healthcare failure and the furore when he put Bannon on the National Security Council without seemingly realising the impact that would have. As a result the more moderate members of his team are acting as a brake on his wilder promises. In addition he's in awe of his Generals and inclined to say yes to whatever they want to do.
