No they don't have to beat Germany - that's the point. A draw against Germany might be enough if they beat Portugal.

They (The Netherlands) could even lose to Germany and still go through in the following, and possible, scenario.

Denmark (W) - Netherlands (L)
Germany (W) - Portugal (L)

Denmark (L) - Germany (W)
Netherlands (W) - Portugal (L)

Netherlands (L) - Germany (W)
Portugal (W) - Denmark (L)

Germany 9 Points
Portugal 3 Points
Denmark 3 Points
Netherlands 3 Points

To decide which team progresses, should 2 or more teams finish in second place on the same number of points, I believe that the following criteria are applied:
1. Points gained in the matches between the tied teams (i.e. Head to Head) -
in the above scenario this wouldn't decide which team progresses as the three teams would have an equal number of points (3)
2. Goal Difference from the matches played between the tied teams
3. Highest number of goals scored in the matches between the tied teams
4. Goal Difference in all matches (i.e. in the above scenario, including the matches against Germany)
5. Highest number of goals scored in all matches (i.e. in the above scenario, including the matches against Germany)
6. Team with the highest UEFA ranking

I read something a few days and in 10 of the last 12 World Cup finals, the runner up in the final has only one match in the group stage or sometimes none at all and have gone at the group stage of the Euros

any1 see much of that hodgson interview during match yesterday? still makes me laugh, saying he doesnt see rio as a player to come off the bench! you look at central midfield players we have, gerrard, lampard, barry and if they were all fit then not all them could play in 2 positions and forgot about scott parker! if lampard was there and barry then maybe they would both be on the bench so parker and gerrard could maybe be first choice in the centre! lampard would be handy to come off the bench if we need a goal, barry im not sure what he does, all i know is that he has no pace, so if they have both got experience like rio has and they would be there, then the football reasons hodgsons given for rio not being there are just getting more laughable!

I wish roy would just stop talking about rio every time he talks about it he just makes it worse.

they wont stop will they cos they dont believe his reasons! if they win it then the media might stop cos it wont matter to them anymore, which is wrong but thats the media for you!
