So far the total is sitting at 37,429 which is still a pretty credible figure, the problem with it having to gain more than 100,000 for the issue to be discussed in parliament is that it's near impossible. Closing date mind you is 18/06/2014, so perhaps still time for a late surge.

Most people who are opposed to the move surprisingly will not sign it out of fear that the list of names will somehow be published. Thats the problem with this issue and all such petitions, its such a sensitive and taboo subject that most are just giving this the body swerve.

I think a lot of people are missing the point of the petition, its not about porn, it's about the right as citizens of a democratic nation to be allowed to make their own choices. We live in a free society and if Cameron thinks this move is going to make him popular with the voters then he is very much mistaken. Not only will the Tories gets defeated at the next General Election, they will be crushed bigger than they suffered in 1997.

Without going into any kind of political speech I think the nanny state that has been created is going to make for very interesting choices as I strongly suspect that the election results might just break away from the traditional 2 horse race Cool

You can make your own choice. You can switch the filter on or off.

Not only that, but if parents think the porn filter that have bought is not good enough, they can change supplier. No such choice if they are forced to use (and pay for) the ISPs one and they just buy in the Governments favourite. Its called the Free Market.

RE: Porn Filters
I was going to watch the Channel 4 documentary about the effect of porn on teenagers this evening, but the few clips I caught put me right off watching the full documentary.

Here are the edited highlights.

Teenagers have unlimited access for porn.
That includes violent porn.
This can produce the same types of brain activity as drug addition.
(In all? Or just some?)
Therefore it is bad.

- I made the last bit up but you can bet that is what the censorship brigade will be saying.

How about this as an alternative?
1. Teens need to be educated that porn is fantasy made by people out to make the biggest profits they can.
2. Porn is a highly competitive industry, to stay in business producers need to do something different, and sometimes that's violent porn.
3. Its fantasy, not reality, and sensational fantasy at that, just the same as action movies, TV detective movies and TV soaps.
4. Of course the women in porn movies act like they like whatever is being done to them and as if it is normal. Its still a fantasy though.

5. Banning porn wont work.

6. Not educating kids about porn being fantasy is denial and mind numbingly stupid.

7. Blocking satisfying regulated UK porn will drive teens (all 18+) and adults abroad, to unregulated sites that freely mix safe and harmful content.

8. Removing explicit content from UK porn will stop it being satisfying, driving teens (18+) and adults abroad.

RE: Porn Filters
Interesting article on ConservativeHome "the home of conservatism" yesterday by columnist Marina Kim. Emphasis added by me, not the author. Not policy but interesting to see these views here:

ConservativeHome Wrote:Not all porn is bad, and I would be cautious allowing the Government into all areas of the web. Porn is often viewed as something that suppresses women but that is not a good enough reason to ban it. Moreover, porn could be a force for good, if you look at it from a different perspective. Personally, I found that it has liberated me. Yes, I watch porn (and yes, I still blush when I say this word, even in writing). I will probably get shy and avoid answering this question if you ask me in person, but here is my little online confession: I find it has helped me find out what I actually like in bed.

It has helped me experiment, and it doesn’t matter anymore whether my partners in the past were experienced or not. I don’t even need many partners as I have already found out, thanks to porn, what it is that actually turns me on. I see a good side of it, providing that women are involved in it through their own choice. However, men should learn not to convey the disrespectful attitude to a woman, if that is what she enjoys, out of the bedroom into their day-to-day interactions. I think that is where many men struggle. But that is their problem, not the problem of these women or porn. Rapists could be rapists regardless of what they watch or not watch. As John Whittingdale said, speaking on the subject: “Porn doesn’t make rapists.”

Another good point was made on the issue of the real cause of this problem. The internet should not just be filtered – people who are doing bad things should be arrested.

“It’s law enforcement that we want,” said Nick Pickles [from Big Brother Watch].
