There’s nothing wrong with seeking a bit of friendly advice (& perhaps a little confidence boost) before approaching the big boys, but you’re absolutely right. No one’s ever going to get a job without approaching the channels directly.

So far, I think that the best advice is to get some professional photos done. At least then you’ll have something concrete which you can approach people with.
