Correct.
Labour orginally paid for it. The Tories said that the BBC should cover the costs. But they allowed them to raise the fee to cover it.
So if they aren't going to cover the costs they should bring the fees down.

The BBC wouldn't have a problem if they hadn't given their executives have a 30% pay rise.

RE: BBC licence fee yes or no
I see this forum has returned to bash the BBC. Funny that it’s criticised by the right for being too left wing and the left for being too right wing. Across the world it’s viewed as a bastion of honest reporting and is attacked at home for doing that.

Staff salaries are viewed with envy yet are less than paid by commercial rivals with whom they compete for talent. They have the most restrictive public service broadcasting regulations of any UK broadcaster.

The current furore has been caused by politicians. The Labour Party offered free TV Licences for the over 75’s as a bribe. Theresa May at the last General Election confirmed it would remain for the length of this Parliament even though the BBC were being forced to pay for it.

In my view we should have a public service broadcaster free from political influence otherwise we risk what you get with Fox News in the US. That means funding should be at arms length from Government and not subject to editorial meddling by advertisers.

The politicians should sort out the mess they created.

(And no I don’t get a free TV Licence nor do I anticipate needing it paid for me when I do eventually qualify but I would say that ANY pensioner who does qualify now or in the future should not get a free licence if they also pay for SKY etc because they certainly can afford to pay for it!)

Cant the CONservatives privatise the BBC, or is there no money in it for them. It's time we didn't have to fund the mad wages of Lineker and Co, time to tell the BBC to fuck off.annoyedannoyedannoyed

IMO the issue with the salaries is because people are paying the license fee thus by a great deal are actually contributing to said salaries. Mixed with the level of TV programming which is poor considering it’s supposedly funded by license fees.

The government shouldn’t be allowed to use the license fee as a “bribe” or “bait” to get votes or drum up support. All TV companies should be as far away as possible from political influence, especially something as polarising as the license fee argument.

If the license isn’t scrapped and is given to over 75’s it should be means tested. Not blanketly covering ALL over 75’s. If you have x savings x pension no free license fee. Because contrary to belief not ALL over 75’s are set up outstandingly amazing pensions.

I have no idea what I'm doing here but I'm here!!!

Which is effectively what the BBC propose - only the over 75's in receipt of Pension Credit would get a free licence

Few of us will be 75 and have a healthy bank balance, or be fully paid-up home owners at the current rate.

yeah food rationing...rickets, tb, asbestos,no bathrooms, outdoor toilets, no running hotwater, no wahsing machines, tv, jobs that health and safety would not allow nowadays.....60 hours + work each week, no benefits, they had it really easy....Rolleyes

Reaching a bit there, aren't you? Having to go back 70/80 years to reference problems they had. Especially as it isn't what I mentioned. IE: getting actual value for their money. Incredibly affordable housing.

Maybe next time you can go even further back and mention all the witch burnings and plagues they had to endure.

Think about this then - most of those diseases back ARE actually making a comeback in parts of the world where they were considered extinct an TB cases have been reported in parts of London over the last few years thanks to the inefficiencies of modern medicines/vaccines.

About time the BBC made pay performance related or bring in a salary cap for it's top earners.
