And I would agree HP it seems way easier to build a business on - line than it is on the high street but maybe it s better to use the online business as a way to build up capital so you could invest in a high street unit at some point. Even so it also depends on your relationship with your bank manager

it was bound to happen with Walmart looking to spend some of the trump tax windfall cash and consolidate market share and try and take more of tesco

Interesting its sainsburys doing the takeover not the other way round. Saying that will be no store clousures or staff losses

And what are the Government doing to reverse this?

I'm not sure there is anything the government can do to reverse it, I think this is part of the natural progression as shopping moves online and to large scale shopping malls, reversing it would be like pushing back the tide

What the Government can look at is what to do with the high street going forward, rather than have our high street depended on shops which are hell bent on leaving they could look to revitalise them as social hubs. The high street can become the centre for bars, restaurants, coffee shops etc things that cannot go online. Look to develop social housing in the empty upper floors of your M&S & BHS as a restaurant or bar will only require one or two. Develop some green spaces and improve transport infrastructure, personally I am a fan of the idea of cars being banned from city centres and having them supplied by a renewable powered tram system

Poundworld are set to pass into administration having failed to find a buyer

The John Lewis Partnership, which operates the department store and upmarket grocery chain Waitrose, warned today that profits for the first half of this year will be 'close to zero' amid a 'major shift' for the High Street.
In a scheduled strategy update, the retailer said earnings for the full year will likely be 'substantially' lower than last year too, when it reported a 77 per cent fall in pre-tax profit to £104m.
