The relevant rule is article 5.04 of the UEFA Europa League regulations which states that "Forty gold medals are presented to the winning club". Chelsea were able to nominate recipients for these 40 medals as they wished.

Thanks, I knew they got 40 medals, its just that, as he was ineligible to play for Chelsea, I thought he wouldn't be able to get one and the others would be given to the 25 man squad, coaches, physios, medical staff, kit men etc

UEFA do give guidelines on who should receive a medal, stating that they should go to “all players who have been fielded in the UEFA Europa League season and those on the match sheet in the final”. When Chelsea won the Champions League last season those guidelines only covered 23 players, so Chelsea still had 17 medals to distribute absolutely as they wished. The figures would be similar this time, so there was no need to leave Demba Ba out even though he was ineligible for the competition. As a footnote to this, Andre Villas-Boas has queried why Chelsea never sent him a medal last year, since he was manager of the club for the Champions League group stage.

I think this would have been the top football story today, if not for Beckham's retirement.

Congratulations to Juan Mata on being named the Chelsea Player of the Year and also winning the Chelsea Players Player of the Year. Very well deserved! Nathan Ake picked up the Chelsea Young Player of the Year award.

Rafa Benitez has been announced as the new coach of Napoli. Goodbye Rafa and good luck for the future.
