Porn Filters

What worries me about these proposals to protect the kids is that the politicians really believe what they propose will stop the youngsters viewing pornography. When I was a kid at school we couldn't buy the porn mags of the day, but we still got to stick a few pages together. And if our leaders think they can stop kids viewing today's porn. How out of touch are they? Or is it that they want to be seen to be doing what they think is the right thing in the eyes of the voters and nothing more than that.

The Daily Mail article seems to be an attempt to make the policy sound like a success for the censorship brigade. Sounds like it will be compulsary for ISPs to give new subscribers access to voluntary content filters, and the default setting will be ON.

There will be "options to block particular kinds of content, individual sites or restrict access at specific times of the day." as "Mr Cameron, however, insists it is clear that a ‘more sophisticated system’ will be more effective – arguing that straightforward ‘on/off’ filters are so wide-ranging that parents often switch them off in frustration when they block innocent sites." and "Some might ask why, then, this Government has not taken the route of ‘default on’ filters for new computers, so that each one that is bought comes with blanket filters for all unsuitable content. There’s a simple reason why we haven’t done this: all the evidence suggests such a crude system wouldn’t work very well in practice."

There does not seem to be an option for different settings for each family member, but who knows.

The DM claims a kind of victory twisting this into "this is a kind of “default on” for houses with children"

Claire Perr, the MP who campaigned for porn filters said "As near as damn it, we have got what we want and most campaigners are quite happy."

There are 2 worrying aspects:
Claire Perry is to be appointed as adviser on reversing the commercialisation and sexualisation of childhood.

Mrs Perry said effective checks on the age of a person setting up filters – probably using credit card details and the electoral roll – would be vital to ensure children could not get round the new system.

Not sure if you guys have seen this but its some positive news for freedoms in this country! Education is what's needed not 'blunt instruments (listen up OFCON)!

A report released on Friday by the department for education and the home office instead said that internet service providers will be asked to advise and steer parents towards making an "active choice" by offering software that blocks out pornography and self-harming sites.

The apparent climbdown follows a 10-week public consultation process. David Cameron had indicated as recently as last month that he wanted firms to follow the lead of TalkTalk, which was the first big name internet service provider to introduce network-level filtering of websites for its customers." Yes I've always believed that educuation is the only sensible path to go down. Over 18's should always have choice, whether it be to buy alcohol, tobbaco, view or buy pornography.

My hope's for 2013 is that more education is given to the parents/guardians on how to block the adult channels from their SKY/Freeview box's that allows for more explicit content to be aired whether it be FTA or encrpted and less of a nanny state mentality and more commonsense prevailing.

Democracy = freedom of choice and the moment that ends it then becomes nothing more than a dictatorship.

ATVOD have now decided the only way to protect The Nation from the tide of filth available abroad (from out closest partners) is to force banks to stop transactions to foreign pay websites that do not have proper age verification, and have asked the Government to make that law.

I haven't been keeping up with this subject matter but what is proper age verification? I thought you had to be 18 to have a credit card, so isn't that age verification?

From what has been posted here, it seems the regulations that ATVOD is supposed to be enforcing identify a 'minor' as someone under the age of 15. However, they have decided that 'proper age verification' should be something like a dummy credit card tranaction, since these can only be issued to over 18's, unlike debit cards which can be given to under 15's. So they are actually imposing an over 18's policy rather than an over 15's one as they are supposed to.

Many foreign adult sites have a simple 'Are you over 18' yes/no question before you are allowed to proceed further, no actual verification takes place until/unless you buy/subscribe.

If the current do gooder brigade in Parliament get their way all public WiFi will be defaulted to non adult content. Hopefully access to political party sites will come under the ban so we can't have our minds poisened by their endless bullshit.
