Moon(2009)
Sam Rockwell stars as Sam Bell,an astronaut coming to the end and of his three year solo stint on a mining operation on the moon.He then discovers that he's not the only version of himself?
Described by director Duncan Jones, the son of David Bowie as "A love letter to all those old science fiction films",notably Outland,Silent Running andthe 2001,it clearly wears its influences proudly.Kevin Spacey as the voice of the computer is straight from 2001 and Duncan Jones handpicked Bill Pearson,a model maker from Ridley Scott's Alien to work on the desolate lunar base that was created at Shepperton Studios for five million dollars, very modest by today's standards. There's nothing cheap about Sam Rockwell's performance though,it's a career high and the heart of the film.

The Black Cat(1934)
A deeply bizarre and sadistic film from Edgar G.Elmer starring Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi as bitter enemies embroiled in an ongoing feud.Featuring many unsettling scenes and in particular the ending, where Lugosi(the good guy)skins Karloff alive!

The Face At The Window(1939)
An atmospheric and effective horror picture from George King.A series of brutal and animalistic murders in nineteenth century France are attributed to a wolf man.Todd Slaughter,Marjorie Taylor and John Warwick all put in fine performances that help the film along.

The Phantom of the Opera(1943)
Arthur Lubin directed Claude Reigns this time as "Erique" instead of Erik(why his character name was changed I do not know)and this time he's a violinist, not a composer.Universal's technicolour remake of their own film has more of Nelson Eddy's singing than any real horror but it does have the most spectacular falling chandelier sequence of all the The Phantom of the Opera films.Suzanna Foster is also very good as Christine.

Superman The Movie(1978)
Director Richard Donner not only made us believe a man could fly with the amazing effects,he also brought levity to the script by casting the actors perfectly. The tone is also spot on,matching the action with comic timing and romance brilliantly.Christopher Reeve was perfect for role of Superman once he bulked up naturally thanks to a strict diet and training regime given to him by Dave Prowse. His physicality sorted,Reeve proved to be a godsend, bringing a seemingly effortless mix of warmth and wit to both Superman and Clarke Kent.Gene Hackman,Ned Betty,Margot Kidder,Marlon Brandon,Jackie Cooper,Mark McClure and Terrence Stamp are also seemingly born to play their respective roles. Its all given wings by John Williams' heart soaring score. Its amazing that Richard Donner was able to make it all work given the pressure he was under from father and son producer combo, the Salkinds who never really believed in him,Donner proved them and all the other doubters wrong by giving us what is,the greatest superhero/comic book adaptation that's ever been made.
