Part One - The Moorish South

The Moors were the muslims from North Africa who invaded the Iberian peninsula, starting with Gibraltar in 711 AD. They ruled the Southern parts of what are now Spain and Portugal to varying degrees until the end of the Reconquista in 1492 when they were finally expelled.

The Moorish empire in Iberia was known as Al-Andalus and was the leading centre of culture and learning in Europe during its early period and some of their impressive buildings survive such as the mosque in Cordoba and the Alhambra Palace in Granada.

Graham-Dixon explains all this and more but the problem he faces is that there's not much in the way of "art" for him to discuss. He points out that figurative art is banned in Islam which just leaves a handful of buildings to look at. Despite this I enjoyed this episode as most of the history was new to me and it was presnted in an engaging manner.

River Walks
Nidderdale

Another series of poundshop travelogues (see Canal Walks, Raiway Walks etc). This episode was presented by Amar Latif who is blind so we get the perspective of someone who experiences the landscape using sounds and smells with a guide describing the visuals.

Nidderdale is one of the Yorkshire Dales but is outside of the National Park. We see some of the natural features like the How Stern Gorge and the picturesque waterfalls. The Scar House Reservoir near the head of the dale is featured. A village of a thousand people was built here in the 1920s to build the reservoir. After it was finished the buildings were either demolished or dismantled and moved elsewhere including the church. The only structure left standing is the projector room of the cinema which was made of concrete and therefore couldn't be recycled.

The town of Pateley Bridge is the largest settlement in Nidderdale and is often included in lists of the best places to live in Britain. It also houses the oldest sweetshop in the world, established in 1827

I've really liked what I've seen of the River Walks series.
