Hoop Dreams(1994)
Steve James's documentary was controversially ovrelooked at the 1995 Academy Awards for the best documentary feature nomination(an omission that led to a change in the rules governing the selection procedures in that category).Hoop Dreams follows two young African American NBA hopefuls,William Gates and Arthur Agee as they try to work their way out of inner city Chicago.Even though the documentary was only meant as a half hour feature on PBS,the cameras ended up recording for five years and director James got 170 minutes of footage covering the triumphs and setbacks from high school to college.Sadly the setbacks outnumber the triumphs as a series of unexpected and bitter twists take centre stage. However, they only enhance the power of the footage. You don't even need to be a basketball fan to enjoy this most honest of documentary films.

Dracula's Daughter(1936)
Universal's first sequel to Tod Browning's Dracula(1931)has a very interesting plot.It Begins with Abraham Van Helsing played effectively by Edward Van Sloan, being taken to Scotland Yard, accused of Count Dracula's murder.Gloria Holden is also very good as Countess Marya Zaleska.

The Haunting (2009) A Spanish variation on the old, supernatural house, but with interesting ingredients, a mother(played well by Ana Torrent) suffering from post natal depression and with supernatural abilities & the Catholic Church with secrets it wants to hide. Nicely shot with good some acting, and a fine, mostly classical soundtrack, but not really scary enough. Also starring Francisco Boira, Hector Colome, Maria Alfonsa Rosso, Miriam Capa & Rocio Munez-Cobo. 6.5/10

Liliom(1933)
Director Fritz Lang's only French film based on the play by Ferenc Molnar."God's Police" come to take Charles Boyer to heaven to face judgement for the transgressions he commited in life.A very good old fashioned ghost story with some effective opticals that still hold up well.
