"The Dust Bowl" - PBS America

Documentary series about the drought and sandstorms and general devastation of the farms in the Mid West prairies of the US in the 1920s/1930s.

Explains that the catastrophe was brought about by inappropriate and excessive ploughing up of the natural grasslands to plant wheat in vast areas during an atypical period of relatively higher rainfall during the late 1900s/early 20th century.

These areas had generally been considered unsuitable for agriculture and uninhabited by farmers up to that point, having been foraging land for wild bison (which were hunted to extinction) and Native Americans (until they were put into Reservations) and then good old capitalism in the shape of railroad companies, the US govt(!), and unscrupulous Real Estate agents all got involved flogging off marginal land to desperate homesteaders.

There was a mini-boom during good harvest years in the 1920s, and then the Wall Street Crash devastated demand. The resulting fall in agricultural prices led to a vicious spiral of farmers ploughing up yet more acres of marginal land in a desperate attempt to maintain their income against tumbling agricultural prices.

When the rainfall returned to normal (low!) levels, the resulting drought combined with the churned up acres of ploughed land stripped of the natural moisture-retaining grasslands led to huge storms blowing tonnes of ploughed-up and parched soil clean across the continent from West to East, in some cases all the way to New York.

The human cost in the prairie communities was horrific, including infant and child death from "dust pneumonia".

A clear example of catastrophic man-made environmental and climate change from 90 years ago.

Luckily we've learned from it and won't continue to disregard the ecosystem in the pursuit of profit Rolleyes

Redacted Tonight
The Epstein/Maxwell connection that the meedja ISN'T talking about. Oh, and hypocrisy with Labour anti-semitism.

The Hidden Wilds of the Motorway
Some lass walks through the woods and fields around the M25 to show what a boon it's been to wildlife and the natural world.

Stargirl Ep 8 Shiv” Part 2 Season 1

All I can say about certain particular character in this Ep is if they follow the comics closely as they have done it’s not be what you think with that character.

The Amazing Johnathan
Great, now there's Sky Documentaries as well.
Ben Berman starts making a doc about a great magician who's reportedly dying. But then Johnathan brings in a 2nd doc team. And Ben meets a 3rd team (the great Mad Chad) and learns of a 4th project too. So Ben has to wonder how much is he being sold an illusion? Funny, if sometimes bleak, stuff.
