Malaysia Airlines Flight 370

They are changing huge chunks of the story now, with a new flight path covering the turnback to Malaysia and a new wording of the handoff to Malaysian ground control and now they say the pilot gave the handoff not the co-pilot as they said before. It's very strange to say the least how the basic facts of what happened keep changing. How can it take over 3 weeks to get the story straight?

The captain was an aviation nutter and a self-confessed geek, not only spending countless hours on his simulator but even making youtube videos showing how to repair air conditioning systems. IMHO he would have been well aware about Inmarsat satellite and every other tracking mechanism that could possibly be fathomed.

You're kidding right? Inmarsat data has never before been used for this purpose and it wasn't meant to be a tracking device anyway. How could anyone have anticipated the Immarsat pings being used as they have been?

Does it make any difference though whether they said "All right, good night" or "Good Night Malaysian Three Seven Zero" and whether it was the pilot or the co-pilot? It does not strike me as a big deal.

It's a big deal because it took over 3 weeks to find this out. Who's in charge of the investigation, Inspector Clouseau?

I've come to the conclusion the searchers are looking in the wrong place, otherwise they would have found something by now. An airliner hitting the ocean should leave a substantial debris field after all.

So it seems that we are back to square one again, that is if it isn't in the ocean then it must be on the ground somewhere.

While seismic systems used by the Vienna-based Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization are intended to detect nuclear explosions, they're also capable of picking up "the explosion of a larger aircraft, as well as its impact on the ground or on water," Stephane Dujarric, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's spokesman, told reporters in New York.

But tests over the weekend had confirmed that "neither an explosion nor a plane crash on land or on water had been detected so far," Dujarric said Monday.

The organization's executive secretary ordered that all its sensors be used to try to find the plane, and he encouraged scientists from around the world to "carefully study the available data," Dujarric said.

It may be a big deal but it's not even remotely surprising.

Think back the the Japanese Earthquake / Tsunami and how Tepco behaved over Fukushima. They aren't accustomed to being open with information in that part of the world, it's all about "saving face".
