Except that if you can't get in the England team then look for some grandparent who may have been born in one of the other countries.

This statement only applies to football. Not rugby and specifically, definely not cricket. Rolleyes

Why would i support a country which always comes with the best team on paper but always fucks up and is a general embarassment to support in the world cup of football?

And i support England in the ashes in cricket, but since im indian (but born and bred in the UK) i support India and England for cricket

Using 'God Save the Queen' as both The British and the English anthem causes problems.

Better to have separate English and British anthems.
How do you expect Scots and Welsh sportsmen to have what they see as an English anthem being played.

Errr...thanks for that Mitchell...I think!...Grrrannoyed

I just don't think God Save The Queen is a great anthem on a number of levels, but most importantly because it's just not a very rousing tune. The four that I'd mentioned before are all far more rousing, each building up to a fantastic hairs standing on the back of your neck finale. They clearly sound like they are the anthems of some seriously not-to-be-messed-with powerful nations, whilst England's is about an octagenarian lady in a hat.

I'm certain the Americans, Germans and Russians are far more pumped-up and ready for battle on the field of play after hearing their anthems than the English are; it's almost 1-0 to them before the tossing of the coin!

The fact that I have no feeling for any international side means that I can judge anthems from an unbiased perspective. As a United fan, it's in my DNA to detest You'll Never Walk Alone but I can grudgingly admit that for fans of Liverpool, other clubs who sing it such as Celtic, Sunderland, Aston Villa, AC Milan et al, and for unbiased fans it must be pretty rousing and inspiring to hear it.

if england have the best team on paper then maybe instead of playing on a pitch, they should play on paper, cos they would never lose, would they?

your absolutely spot on about anthems. up until recently at the commonwealth games the english anthem was land of hope and glory, because i believe god save the queen was the commonwealth anthem, which meant england couldnt have it as their anthem at commonwealth games. then about a few thousand people decided in a vote for the last commonewealth games and future ones that they wanted jerusalem as englands new anthem. alll those who won gold in india last year didnt even know the words to jerusalem and the athletes themselves wanted to stick with land of hope and glory. the point is if i represented my country at any sport and i wanted to sing my heart out to an anthem, it wouldnt be god save the queen cos england as a country shouldnt have an anthem about 1 person whether it being a king or queen. not every1 likes the royals, and why should we sing about some1 if we dont like anything about them? god save the queen does nothing for me, where as land of hope and glory mother of the free it seems to describe england better and therefore i prefer that to god save 1 person, who i am not a fan of!!!

I'm not a fan of god save the queen, the thing that pisses me off about it the most is how much it gets shortened

Portuguese national anthem translation

Heroes of the sea, noble people,
Brave, immortal nation,
Raise today once again
The splendour of Portugal!
Amid the mists of memory,
Oh Fatherland, feel the voice
Of your distinguished forefathers,
That shall lead you to victory!

German national anthem translation

Germany, Germany above all,
Above all in the world,
When, for protection and defence, it always
takes a brotherly stand together.
From the Meuse to the Memel,
From the Adige to the Belt,
Germany, Germany above everything,
Above everything in the world!

Is anyone picking up a common theme here with these national anthems besides the poetry of the words!!!!! about how they talk about the GLORY OF THEIR COUNTRY AND LAND!!!!!!!!!!!! NOT ABOUT GOD SAVING A MONARCH WHO HAS NO POWER IN THIS COUNTRY!!!!! Seriously our anthem sucks, it should be about the pride of our country and everything that makes up the beauty of our country, not about one person

It's only Celtic who sing You'll Never Walk Alone every week like we do lindor.Sunderland,Villa and AC Milan...Not sure where you're gettin that from.

I heard Sunderland sang it at old trafford to wind the united fans up at some point and everywhere we go we hear the old "sign on,sign on" version.Im sure Villa had a song about Dwight Yorke to the tune of You'll never walk alone..but not the actual song.

A lot of people haven't seen this video of the AC Milan fans singing You'll never walk alone on the 19th of April 1989 (4 days after Hillsborough). There was a minutes silence called 6 Minutes into the game (The same time the ref stopped the game at Hillsborough) and halfway through the Milan fans started singing You'll never walk alone as a mark of respect.

Top class from them.
