I don't think stats are relevant in these types of discussions. When being astounded by this footballer or that footballer, I don't look at their stats. I look at them playing. Its what we see them do on the pitch that generally leads to us making the arbitary decision of who we think the best player in a team, a league, or the world is.

Don't want to judge a player on stats.
But sheer technical ability,an Messi wins it for me.The way that the ball sticks to his feet when he on an attacking run is something else.
Both are top players but Ronaldo seems to hold back in some games where as Messi is always at forefront in his teams victories.

if both players are at their absolute best, i might go with Ronaldo. however, Messi has been more consistent, has a better attitude and gives more to the team. he is also less of a tosser! if i'm being honest with myself i'd probably still have Ronaldo back at United, but he drove me crazy with all his sulking when he should have been tracking back.

this season though, the difference is negligible and you can't really seperate them.

Not this season though ronaldo 16 league goals 25 overall, messi 26 league goals 35 overall the gap widens again

I would think given the performances in the world cup Messi did way better than Ronaldo

Difficult to say if one is better than the other, they are both very influential yet have different styles of play. Stats don't prove anything conclusively. Ronaldo had a poorer World Cup but he was not fully fit and was surrounded by poorer team mates. That won't be remembered in years to come when looking just at the stats. Both are fantastic players who have by and large won championships for their respective clubs. I'd be happy with either or both in my team
