There are two problems with this. Ofcom and Sky.

Ofcom says PIN encryption must be linked to payment by age verified method, eg credit card. Free PIN protection does not count as far as they are concerned.

Sky charges a shedload of money to PIN protect a channel and link to payment. There is an upfront cost just to set up, plus an annual fee and, if memory serves, a cost per transaction. That takes a huge chunk out of a channels revenue at the same time that PPV reduces the audience size by at least a factor of 10. That reduces call volumes, also who is going to phone an offscreen babe when two onscreen babes are going at it hammer and tongs?

Ofcom should accept that free PIN protection is adequate.

If they insist on adult verification it could be by a oneoff opt in ("registration"), or texting a PIN code to a mobile phone.

Ofcom has taken no action against foreign channels on non Sky satellites, presumably because that is a clear optin system. For consistency they should accept optin on Sky.

Another thought on this. Either the broadcasters have quietly discussed this behind the scenes with Ofcom and got the nod, or Ofcom oppose the move and the broadcasters decided to go over their heads, or the broadcasters have totally bypassed Ofcom. The big question is which is it.

Have there been backroom discussions where Ofcom has said "Go ahead, but leave adult channels out"?

Hang on a minute you can't have ofcom say no problem go ahead to the mainstream channels but still say no to the adult channels. Ofcourse every channel is going to look after themselves on this matter. So the way it looks is that it's grim news for us as this might only apply to the mainstream channels.

I still think in the long term that eventually all inconsitencys will be ironed out but it's going to be the case of yet another piece of humble pie for us to swallow in the meantime.

Ofcom will continue to say something along the lines of because the adult channels are classified as teleshopping channels that they don't qualify for pin encrption unless it involves some sort of payment or subscription fee.

Ofcom will continue to use more bullshit lies in order to fulfil their own agenda and strict control over all things erotic.

The only problem is that this all takes time whether its regarding the broadcasters asking Ofcom to do away with the watershed or the varies other things we've talked about!! And I damned if we're all gonna sit around for another terrible year of Horrific babe channel entertainment Ofcom need to be stopped and they need to be stopped now
Ofcom have clearly lost there way, they've lost all concept of regulation and they've made the rules up as they damn well please when it's suites them!! And this can't be anymore. Since Ofcom has come to power they have systematically bit by bit brought the babe channels to there knees. They have vilified and demonised the female form into something which is bad, and this simply isn't true!!
Ed Richards has lost his way, and is not fit to be in charge of Ofcom change needs to happen and it needs to happen now
Now I no forum members have differing opinions on this, but I feel the babe channel owners should get together and challenge Ofcom in the courts! Yes it's a risk, however the way things are going there won't be much to talk about in the future if they don't do something very soon.

Had a look at the BBFC site to see what their research said and found this from March 2005: "Knowing it when you see it: The difference between '18' and 'R18' video works" by Dr Guy Cumberbatch and Sally Gauntlett http://www.bbfc.co.uk/download/policy-an...e%20it.pdf

Interestingly when asked "So what would you think if your local video shop stocked this type of film?" 56% of the survey group said YES after watching the films. With strict controls, like plain covers. Despite the survey group being prescreened for acceptance of some form of categories & controls. (page 11)

To me this seems relevant to any discussion of whether 18 and R18 should be available on satellite and cable with suitable safeguards.

Also just over a four in ten (42%) participants said (in pre-screening) they were ‘very’ or ‘quite interested’ in erotic films (58% said they were either ‘not at all’ or ‘not that interested’). (page 4)

The survey group consisted of 72 people, 37 men, 35 women, balanced by age and social group. (8 others dropped out).

Participants were required to watch a full length R18 and a full length strong 18 as well as a R18 compilation DVD in the privacy of their home before answering a relatively anonymous phone questionnaire with a same sex interviewer.

Generally they agreed with the 18/R18 categorisation.

Thats not to say the survey group liked some/all the films. There was discomfort or revulsion with gang bang and dual penetration scenes, apparently young women with multiple old(er) men. The lack of plot and variety caused boredom. (page 10 & others)

Various women commented on the male orientation of the films. One woman (19, C1, liberal views) said "You wonder what sort of things would be on at porn aimed at women. I’m not sure what really that would be. The girl on girl is definitely for men, and the girl powering the man's for men, what, I don’t know if there’s anything there for women." (page 20)

There was general agreement that plots would.
• Improve the film
• Adds context
• Would make it more exciting
• Less boring (page 15)

Overlooked point from the article about COBA proposing a change to watershed rules. The Government is talking about new broadcasting laws and preparing a White Paper. Adult channels and viewers should contribute.

You read my mind mate, now that Entwhistle had resigned from the BBC I immediately thought to myself ahha this could be the perfect opportunity for Ed Richards to finally get the job at the BBC. I think the type of person he is, I don't think he'll take any shit.

Eccles you beat me to the post. ED Richards leaving for the BBC was also the first thing that came to my mind when I heard about the BBC resignation.

To be honest I can't see OFCOM or the government doing anything about changing any broadcasting rules, policy or watershed at all for a long time yet given the mess they will have dealing with the BBC mess & crisis both ongoing and that of the last 48 hours or so and similar ongoing antics at ITV.

A colleague friend who works at Broadcasting House said the atmosphere the was dreadful horrid & appalling today and not a nice place to be and over the last few days and maybe in anger certain bosses scapegoating people not remotely connected with any of these scandals high and low in fustration.

This whole sorry state and mess(es) will be overshadowing things so much over the oncoming months & year or more that I'm afraid other than dealing with ongoing complaints & stuff, changes and liberalisation of the adult babe tv channels are likely to be near the bottom of OFCOM, MP's, regulator & government priorities given the almost unprecedented mammoth size and scale of the legal and other investigations by broadcasting authorities, police, law, government and any other independent investigations, enquiries and also private prosecutions that will also happen along the way.

Yes it's always right to continue to and have ongoing discussion about everything on here, but at the moment and I suspect for quite a long time yet, the chances of any changes and regulators having time to do anything constuctive is pretty remote!
