Help with finding decent security software (for free, 'cos I'm tight)

Well I find security software a personal choice as sometimes it's better to have something you can manage than something that is supposedly best but you can't configure
My setup is a little varied with different setups on different units. Added to that I have a whole machine dedicated to the first line of security running as a real firewall
As for you Mr G, try talking to your ISP first as more than a few now offer security software of some description free to customers

I use AVG anti-virus, Comodo firewall & Spybot search & destroy,I have for a couple of years now and I'm pleased to say I have never had a problem.

I use windows XP, hope this is helpful.

Mcafee came free with my machine for six months but before, during and after I've always used avg as one of my old bosses swore by it and he's a bit of genius where computers are concerned so I've no reason to doubt him.

I use my mac, i think comes with its own kind of security, had the imac four years and never had a problem, the laptop with vista don't even get me started.

I have heard people in the past say 'I have this free anti virus and never had a problem', then put a proper anti virus on the machine, do a deep scan and find a couple trojans and a virus...

I do all my surfing on an Acer Aspire One netbook running Linux with no anti-virus installed and nothing has got through.Meanwhile I've had to system restore my Dad's PC three times in under a year and it has Norton,PC Doctor and Spybot running!

I'm pretty sure Norton contains a virus in one of it's updates.

Why would you need 'a proper anti-virus' if you are having no problems with free anti-virus?

The free anti virus might not be making you aware of the fact there is a problem. I have had it happen to me in the past when using AVG and thinking all was well. I had a sneaky trojan key logging and sending small amounts of data, my paypal account got hacked and they spent over £300 on data hosting in Germany. Using a firends copy of Kaspersky found it and cleaned it straight away.

I have had laptops to fix from 'being slow' where they had Avast or AVG on them and when running a paid virus scan it picks up all sorts of things.

No such thing as a free lunch. Seriously, is £20 on a product to keep something that has become vital in peoples lives really that expensive? We spend more on phone calls to the girls

I use BitDefender and Kaspersky at the moment and have used both Nod32 and F-Secure in the past. Only switched due to pricing and offers and can recommend all of them.

Stay away from Norton, McAfee and Panda. They are almost like viruses themselves with all the bloatware in them.
